Kendall Merriam, Rockland's Inaugural Poet Laureate
IN FLANDERS FIELDS
For Lyn Snow
Your shop is a corridor of birth
blossoms preserved
against Maine's hard winters
I wonder if your hands are rough
as I have discovered
many artists' are
but you have a serene
beautiful face
crowned by white hair
you never pretend
what you are not
what you are is wonderful
I am no botanist
I try to keep up with
the animal kingdom
my sister-in-law
collects your work
even though her view
of raw ocean
on Mahalas Lane
is stunning
I promise to look
next time i bring Robin a treat
I know nothing
of the language of flowers
and they do speak
how else would you
be able to capture
their beauty
nodding in the wind
sometimes we require
living blossoms
to give strength to our vases
to give scent to our houses
those are not always available
but your captured treasures
with Poeme or Antilope Perfumes
will do just fine
we will love your work
and commend it to God
who gave you the sight and will
