Sensitivity, Compassion & Respect
While living just outside Glendale, about 40 minutes north of Grants Pass, Oregon, we planned a trip to Mt Ashland to go skiing. None of us had gear. David and Jim made poles out of Yew wood branches. Of course we smoked our way there with that years harvest: the picture was taken in the parking lot as we were getting ready to head to the slopes.
Since we didn't have gear, we stopped at goodwill and bought skiis a few day before. Jim thought the ones we bought were too long, so he took off the bindings, hacked off about a foot from the rear of the skiis using a skill saw, and remounted the bindings. "There" he declares, "who needs to spend all that money on skiis and gear, this will work fine". And it did. He spent a couple of hours on the bunny slopes getting the feel for it before actually hitting the chair and going to the top. Naturally he refused to purchase a lift ticket. I think he got in a couple of runs before he came looking for Dave and I to announce he had been kicked off the mountain for using the lift and not paying. It's not like he drew attention or anything, with the plaid, the dreads, the yewwood poles and the cut off skiis.
