Obituary for William F. Grierson, Sr.

William F. Grierson, Sr.
SOUTH THOMASTON - William F. Grierson, Sr., 80, died Saturday, October 9, 2010, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, following a brief illness.
Born in South Thomaston, June 24, 1930, he was the son of Raymond F. and Jennie Eaton Grierson. He was educated in local schools.
February 11, 1952, he married Frances I. Fuller. The couple lived in South Thomaston all their married lives. Mrs. Grierson died in 2003.
For more than 36 years, he worked as an operator at FMC Marine Colloids. From 1968 to 1972, with his wife, he owned and operated Grierson's Grocery on Route 131 in South Thomaston. In addition to his work at FMC and the grocery store, he also ran a farm where he kept horses and milk cows. In association with the farm, he hauled wood with work horses; and for many years, operated a saw mill with his father and brothers. He also kept saddle horses.
Never one to sit idle, William was haying and bush-hogging until two weeks ago.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and many special times with his family at their camp in Wesley. In 2006, he was pleased to bag a moose; but after six hours work trying to get the moose out of the woods, vowed, "I'll never do that again."
He took great pleasure attending horse shows with his children. He later attended rodeos throughout the eastern United States, enjoyed traveling and visited many areas, such as Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Tombstone, Death Valley, and the Florida Everglades. An avid motorcyclist, he owned a 900 Kawasaki which he once rode to Newfoundland, Canada with the South Thomaston Lion's Club. He loved going out to eat and always ordered something 'Lucy', his beloved nine pound dog, would like.
He was a member of the South Thomaston Lions Club and the Rockland Lodge of Elks, No. 1008.
Other than his wife, Francis, William was pre-deceased by three brothers, Arthur Grierson, Walter Grierson, and Herbert Grierson. He is survived by two sons, William F. Grierson, Jr. and his wife Mary Kate of Owls Head, Steven D. Grierson and his wife Karen of South Thomaston; two daughters, Holly A. O'Donoghue and her husband John of South Thomaston, JoAnn M. Drinkwater and her husband Bertell of Rockland; one sister Marian Rackliff of South Thomaston; and five grandchildren, Steven Grierson, Jr., Lisa Grierson, Stacy Grierson-Wall, Mike Paulsen, and Jake Paulsen, as well as several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 14th at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a celebration of Bill's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday. The Reverend Michael Ferland will officiate. Interment will follow at Ocean View Cemetery, South Thomaston.
Those who wish may make memorial donations to the South Thomaston Lion's Club, P. O. Box 62, South Thomaston, ME 04858.
