Butch Burns • Augusta, Maine

Percy was one of the nicest and most personable people that I have ever known. Percy was always there for so many people, including myself. A rare quality as Percy was always eager and wanted to help those in need, even people that he did not know. Over the years Percy shared many experiences of his earlier years, as well as historical knowledge of the Rockland area. I really enjoyed the conversations we had and hearing the stories that he shared. Stories such as his coastal watch days during WWII, as well as his real early years that he spent as a cook for hunting parties in the Maine woods. Percy's door was always open when I would drop by unexpectantly. Often this would lead to my staying at his home for a few days and "crashing" on his couch. During these times we played many games of cribbage where Percy exhibited great cunning and skill. Over the last several years I kept telling myself that I was going to Belfast to visit Percy, but never followed through. Now how I regret it... I hope that Percy knew how much I admired him and how much respect I had for him. I don't think that I ever told him that. Percy was a true friend and one in a million...
