Shane Gray

a true friend and brother

Shane and I often talked about family, our kids and joked often. It really didn't matter where we were or who we were with. We would always stop and talk. He was an amazing man. I want to share a letter that he wrote to me when I had transitioned to another department from the customer service center at athenahealth. It was shared with everyone in a mass email.

Hi folks,

As you may or may not know today is Bill Littlefield’s last day in the CSC as next week he starts a new chapter with the Posting team.

In his parting I just want to say, Bill, you’re a JERK..

With all the people that I have met since I first started coming up here back in May, you take top honors in the jerk department. I can’t think of a single person you have ever talked about that you didn’t have some kind of jerk comment to make about them. You thrive on giving people crap…all day, every day. You love it when you make a jerk comment to someone and it leaves them standing there speechless.

Have I mentioned you’re a jerk?

But above all that being a jerk, you are my friend. You don’t always say it but you care very much about the people who are close to you. You help anyone, anytime they ask for it or just need it. You’re open. You’re a hard worker. I have always been able to count on you to be there and get the job done. You’re a rock.

When we talk I know I’m getting Bill Littlefield, not someone who tells me what I want to hear. For better or worse you serve up your thoughts, no filter, raw, and honest. In all our conversations I never walked away questioning what you meant because you have always been very clear with what you said to me, and I knew it.

I have nothing but respect for that.

I’m sorry to see you leave the CSC but I am glad you will still be with the athena family. Farewell and all the best Bill. Don’t forget us.

Your friend,

Shane

Brother you made an impact on my life and you will be deeply missed.

Your friend,

Bill
