Obituary for Carl E. Newman

Carl E. Newman
OWLS HEAD - Carl E. Newman, 73, died unexpectedly, Sunday, March 4, 2007 at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Born in Rockland, December 26, 1933, he was the son of Dana S. & Florence Grover Newman. At a young age he moved with his mother and step-father, Earl Guild to Garden City, Long Island, New York. He returned to this area every summer to live and work on the Allard Pierce dairy farm in South Thomaston. Carl always considered Allard and his wife Marion to be like aunt and uncle.
He was educated in Maine and Long Island elementary schools, ultimately graduating in 1953 from North Fulton High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
After graduation, Carl worked at Martin-Marietta, refurbishing B47s, prior to entering the Navy. During that time he served two years as a 'Hose Dragger" aboard the 'USS Forrestal', refueling aircraft.
Following his Naval service, Carl worked several years as a salesman with Frank Vego Ford Sales in Atlanta. He then became associated with a national automobile aftermarket company, eventually rising through the ranks to National Sales Manager and retiring in 2005, after more than 30 years of service.
Through his employment with Frank Vego Ford Sales, Carl established a love of auto racing. In pursuit of that sport he developed a friendship with Richard Petty. The two often enjoyed a friendly rivalry on the race track. Carl's love of cars was evident over the years by the Shelbys, Mustangs and various 'muscle cars' that graced his driveway.
Noting that Jeopardy was Carl's favorite TV show, his lifelong friend, Bill Butman stated. "Never call during Jeopardy - he won't answer the phone".
Predeceased by his brother, Bryce S. Newman, Carl is survived by his former wife who is still his best friend, Lyn Newman of Atlanta, GA; two sons Steven Newman and his wife Toni of Lilburn, GA, Clayton D. Newman of Doraville, GA; two daughters Tracy Daniel and her husband Michael of Lawrenceville, GA, Emily E. Newman of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren April Newman, Stefanie Newman, Brittany Daniel as well as a niece Nancy Ginn and nephew Michael Newman both of Augusta, GA.
A service will be announced in early summer. Caring Cremation provided by Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
