Obituary for Walter Black Sr.
SOUTH THOMASTON – Walter W. Black, Sr., 89, died peacefully, Friday, August 21, 2020 at Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.
Born in Rockland, May 2, 1931, he was the son of Perley and Gladys Pitts Black. He was educated in South Thomaston and St. George Schools. A child of the Depression era, Walter left school to help his family and joined the work force at a young age.
Since he was tall enough to reach the pedals, Walter drove a truck, starting for the Rockland/Rockport Lime Kiln. He went on to haul lobster to Boston for Rackliff and Witham’s Lobster. In the winter months, he hauled pulp wood. Walter finished his career with over 25 years of driving for NorthEast Transportation.
On May 29, 1971, Walter married Doris Richards Brackett. Together they have enjoyed 50 years of marriage.
When not working, Walter could be found outdoors, tinkering in his garage, repairing bikes for neighborhood children and enjoying the general puttering that comes along with being a working man.
Walter was a quiet and private man, but his family remembers he had a competitive streak. Whether it was cribbage, horseshoes, or bowling, he played to win! He was fiercely loyal to his family, and loved spending time with them. An avid outdoorsmen, he also took great joy in deer hunting each fall.
His smile could light up a room, and even when he was in pain, he never complained. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
Predeceased by his sister Eleanor Seiders, and a half-brother Ellison Moon; Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Doris Black of South Thomaston; his and Doris’ children, Walter ‘Skip’ Black, Jr. and his wife Barbara of Waite, Trudy Black of Rockland, Russell Brackett and his wife Buffy of Rockland, Terry Brackett, Valerie Brackett, both of Spruce Head; grandchildren, Forrest Flag and his wife Velma of Warren, Chad Black and his wife Shannon of Jacksonville, FL, Jennifer Noice and her husband Christopher of Owls Head, Roman Mank and his wife Candice, Macy Medlock, Rachel Maynard, Corey Thompson and his wife Jackie, Travis Thompson and his fiancée Christy, Terry Brackett, Kristy, T.J., Ashley Thompson and her fiancé Jacob, and Wayne Brackett; his sisters, Marion Sewall and her husband Alan of South Thomaston, Alice Hutchinson of Jacksonville, FL; as well as many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Walter’s family will remember his life privately at Achorn Cemetery.
