Obituary for Tristan Asher Sawyer

CUSHING — Tristan Asher Sawyer was born Feb. 2, 2004 in Rockport, and passed away at home, in his sleep due to complications from a seizure May 2, 2020, in Cushing. Tristan was a sophomore at Oceanside High school in Rockland.

Tristan was an angel placed on this earth to teach us of love, empathy, kindness and acceptance, and showed us how to see the pure beauty in this world. Tristan was full of life and could light up a room with his presence and smile and, when he heard music, he would sing and dance like nobody was watching.

Tristan is survived by his mother Ashley Southard and her fiance, Michael Secotte; father Mitchell Sawyer and his wife, Jenicca; sisters Lily Dyer and Gracie Sawyer; brothers Teagan and Taylor Secotte; grandparents Laurie Southard, Julie Curtis and Thomas Sawyer; great-grandparents George and Susan McKown, Loretta Nash and Gracie Sawyer; uncles Ron Sawyer, Thomas Sawyer Jr., Tyler Curtis-Southard and his wife, Andrea, and Michael Sawyer and his wife, Miranda; aunts Jade Southard and Monica Sawyer; cousins Noah Allender, Emma Curtis-Southard, Eli Malburg and Micael, Aaron, Brady and Jace Sawyer.

Tristan was predeceased by grandfathers Harold Sawyer and Franklin Nash; uncles Sheldon Curtis and Paul Benner and by his cousin Tyler Sawyer.

Tristan had a love for the water and swimming, spending endless hours in the lake at the family camp, in the ocean or in quarries with family, on Vinalhaven. Tristan liked a thrill and looked forward to visiting the local fairs and going on the very biggest and fastest of the rides.

He enjoyed traveling the state and finding special things to do, especially for holidays and birthdays, such as go-karting, rollerblading, ice skating, hiking or touring museums. He also loved to cook, a passion he shared with his Mom.

Tristan was extremely intelligent and showed great promise for future endeavors, especially from his creative side, and often talked about a career in films. From an early age, he loved creating stop-motion movies; he later wrote a screenplay and was recently working on his own novel. He found true happiness in sharing his love for movies with his family and drawing them into his interest, especially his favorites, “Back to the Future” and the “Marvel” series.

His creativity was also evident in his drawings, which he had immense talent, often finding inspiration from some of his favorite animated shows including "Kids Next Door," “Thomas the Tank Engine," "Ben 10" and "Spongebob Squarepants." Inspiration came easily to him with his photographic memory as he was able to recite back his favorite movies and shows from an early age.

Tristan was a true warrior achieving all this despite a myriad of challenges with falling on the autistic spectrum. Tristan did have more to overcome than most, but never let that get him down from being the sweet, kind-hearted old soul he was, and was never afraid to be himself, "The best" the one and only Tristan Asher.

A memorial service will be held July 11, at 11:30am at Achorn Cemetery in Rockland. Attendees are welcome to wear Tristan’s favorite colors, purple and teal. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
