Obituary for Timothy Barton Dyer
VINALHAVEN – Timothy B. Dyer, 72, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, August 27, 2020 at his home with his wife by his side.
Born September 12, 1947 in Belfast to Leslie Dyer and Patricia Emmons, he was raised from a very young age by his father and Emily Kelwick Dyer, whom he considered his mother. His family eventually moved to Vinalhaven where he was educated in local schools and graduated from Vinalhaven High School.
Following High School Tim attended Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (SMVTI) in South Portland where he studied engineering and construction. He then went on to enlist in the U.S. Navy Reserves serving as a “Seabee” (Construction Battalion).
On July 19, 1969 just four months shy of his honorable discharge from the US Navy, he married the love of his life, Cynthia Conway, at the Union Church and the two would go on together to raise their family on the island.
Upon returning to the island following his service, he began work with Woodrow Bunker before venturing on his own as a Commercial Lobsterman.
Tim started lobstering at nine years old with his father and would joke that at fourteen he worked “part time’, ninety hours a week, for Clyde Bickford at the fish plant. He would fish for scallops, lobsters and other species, often handlining which he was doing right up until his passing.
He had been a member of the American Legion, was very proud of his service and was known to be very patriotic.
Besides his family, Tim loved to golf and looked forward to playing in the annual “G&T” tournament on North Haven where he won it one year. He went with the guys on many golf trips around Maine and Myrtle Beach. Unfortunately, his days of playing golf came to an end after injuries from a tree falling on him prevented him from playing.
Tim’s other love was his vegetable garden. His wife states that for him to be out working in his garden was like meditation to him.
Predeceased by his parents Leslie and Emily Dyer, he is survived by his wife Cynthia, his son Shannon Dyer and his wife Dawne, and his daughter Leslie Dyer and her partner Tobin Sewall, all of Vinalhaven; his sister, Marianna Gibbons of Waterloo Iowa; six grandchildren, Justin, Danielle, Hannah, Kaleb, Ian Dyer and his wife Carly, and Adam, two aunts, two uncles, and numerous cousins.
A time of gathering to celebrate Tim’s life will be announced at a later date.
