Obituary for Sue Gerrish

ROCKLAND - Sue Ellen Gerrish, 88, died Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at the Sussman House in Rockport after a long battle with illness.

Born in 1932 to Jack and Bess Winer Tucker, Sue grew up in the Boston area and maintained her love of the area throughout her life. She loved to regale her children and grandchildren with stories of taking the trolley to Fenway Park, Revere Beach, and The Franklin Park Zoo.

Sue attended Boston University and worked for a CPA before meeting her future husband, Doug Gerrish, on a blind date.

After marriage, Sue moved with her husband to Rockland where she became actively involved in the family business, first Carroll Cut Rate on Main Street, and later Doug’s Gift Shop at the then Mammoth Plaza, and later on Main Street.

Sue and Doug built their dream house on Samoset Road in 1959. The house, sadly, was lost in a 1996 landslide. While a tragedy in the loss of their home the remarkable generosity of the people of Rockland was never forgotten.

Sue was predeceased by her husband Doug Gerrish who passed away in 2013 and by a niece, Jamie Dubinsky, and many close friends.

She is survived by three children, Marjorie Gerrish of Warren, Jim Gerrish and his wife Beth of Rockland, Scott Gerrish and his wife Debra of Allenstown, NH; six grandchildren, Joshua Gerrish and his wife Belle, Jennifer Gerrish and her husband Tom Caldwell, Katherine Gerrish and her partner Cyrus Sleeper, Steven Gerrish and his wife Katie GilPatrick, Melissa Gerrish and her partner Mitchell Richardson, Matthew Gerrish; seven great-grandchildren, Zackery Gerrish, Brianne Gerrish, Emma Gerrish, Abigail Dennison, Chloe Dennison, Everett Gerrish; her sister Nancy Dubinsky and her husband Bill of Palm Desert, CA; a niece Lori Clark and a nephew Mark Dubinsky and his wife Pat.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions services will be with immediate family only.

Sue was a loving and generous person. She would ask that those that wish to donate do so to a local food bank or other charity to help those in need in these difficult times.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
