Obituary for Sarah Monroe

ROCKLAND – Sarah J. Monroe, 40, passed peacefully from complications of the flu, pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism, Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Sarah was surrounded by her loving and devoted family.

Born in Rockport, January 20, 1979, she was the daughter of Michael and Patricia Reynolds Monroe. Educated in Thomaston, Sarah was a 1997 graduate of Georges Valley High School. That summer, Sarah enjoyed participating in the Maine Lobster Festival Sea Goddess Pageant, and the evening of the coronation, she and her mother opened their home to many of the girls and they all spent the night under the stars.

Following graduation she attended Mt. Ida College in Newton, MA where she studied Veterinary Science for one year. Later Sarah worked side by side with her father in his residential construction company from 1999 to 2004. Sarah worked very hard helping in a variety of projects and was always excited and willing to learn new things. Her father treasured this time with her so much. Sarah loved being on and near the ocean and held several jobs in that industry.

In 2000 Sarah welcomed the love of her life, her daughter, Effie. Effie was Sarah’s whole world. Together they spent many hours combing the beaches of Mid-Coast Maine for sea glass and drift wood. The pair was happy just spending time together and being close to each other. Spending time outdoors was something Sarah cherished. She took great joy in tending her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens.

A kind hearted person who would give her last dime to help others in need, Sarah also had a special place in her heart for animals. She loved her various cats and especially her dog ‘Sammy’. Volunteering at the local animal shelter was another favorite pastime.

Sarah will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Sarah is survived by her daughter Effie Monroe of Rockland; her mother Patty Monroe and her companion Brad Williams of Union; her father and step-mother Mike and Joanna Monroe of South Thomaston; her brothers, Thomas Monroe and his wife Tiffany of Owls Head, Andrew Monroe of South Thomaston, Matthew Poole and his wife Olivia of South Bristol; four nephews, Hunter, Jack, Chase and Blake; and two nieces, Makenna, and Taya, as well as one cousin, Kathy.

Sarah’s family has chosen to remember her life privately. She will be laid to rest in the spring. Those who wish to honor her memory, may do so with a donation to Pope Memorial Humane Society, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, Maine 04841.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
