Obituary for Raymond Edward Young
ROCKLAND - Raymond Edward Young, 95, beloved husband of Anita Mae Young who predeceased him, passed away on April 11th at his daughter's home in Bremen. Born September 3, 1924, Raymond was the only son of George and Bernice Edwards Young.
Raymond grew up in Rockland with his two sisters, Muriel and Dorothy. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and went to the North African theater of war, taking a ship to Algiers in August. Becoming very ill, he shipped home late that year, but remained in the Army after his recovery serving stateside as a baker and meat cutter. During his time in Portland, he met his future wife Anita and they remained married for over 60 years, until her death in 2010. Raymond worked at Frankie's garage and ran a printing press after the war, but eventually returning to Rockland he became a business owner in waste management for 27 years.
Raymond and Anita had a daughter, Deborah Ann, and proudly raised her together. Family was very important to Raymond and there was nothing he wouldn't do for his daughter, his siblings, his grandchildren, or other family members. Raymond lived in the house next-door to his mother until the end of her life, helping to care for her. After a surgery late in life that led to his wife having difficulties walking, Raymond willingly helped her with a smile. A joker at heart, he got along easily with people, creating a loyal group of friends around town. He enjoyed playing cards, throwing horseshoes competitively, running garage sales, camping at Sandy Shores, and many of his wife's hobbies. He was an active member of the American Legion and Elks Lodge in Rockland for over sixty years.
Raymond was predeceased by his parents, siblings, and many of his friends and neighbors. He is survived by his loving daughter Deborah Rancourt and her husband Jeffrey of Bremen; four grandchildren, Jeremiah Rancourt and his wife Lisa of Hermon, Rene Henderson and her husband Todd of China, Zachary Rancourt of Bremen and Arielle Rancourt and her fiancé Tom of Freeport. He had four great-grandchildren Alexander and Andrew Rancourt, and Cole and Finn Henderson.
Mr. Young’s family will lay him to rest privately, beside his beloved wife, at Achron Cemetery. A public funeral service will be announced this summer. Flowers for the summer service will be gratefully accepted.
