WALDOBORO – Patricia A. Spofford, 83, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 7, 2020 at her home in Waldoboro surrounded with love.

Born February 27, 1937 to John and Medora (Maynard) Mendes in Boston MA, she was raised in Milton MA, educated in local schools, and graduated from Jeanne D’Arc Academy, class of 1954.
Before graduating from High School Patricia traveled abroad when she was 16 years old.

She developed a love for horses at a young age when her father purchased for her, her very first horse, a Stallion she named Finnegan. Her love for horses eventually led her to own and operate Broad Bay Farm where she had many horses and employed lots of local teenagers to work in the stalls and perform other farm work.

In 1972 Pat married the love of her life, Parker Spofford, and together they ran a successful Real Estate company named Parker Spofford Realty in Waldoboro.

Known as an amazing Artist, she specialized in drawings, watercolors, and egg terperas. Her artwork won acceptance in the annual American Watercolor Society Exhibition at the National Academy in New York City and for two years straight her work was chosen by the society to travel throughout the United States. One of her paintings, “Sand Flats” was profiled on the cover of the July 1979 edition of DownEast Magazine.

Patricia loved to garden and was a member of the Waldoboro Gardening Club for many years. She enjoyed watching westerns, especially Gunsmoke.

She loved dogs of all kinds but had a special fondness for long haired golden retrievers. Her latest pup, Duke, was always by her side.

Predeceased by her parents, and her husband Parker, Patricia is survived by her sons, Michael and Peter Zani of California; her step-sons, Dana Spofford of Waldoboro, and Todd Spofford of Augusta, as well as several grandchildren.

No services will be held for Patricia as her life will be remembered privately by those who knew her and were close to her.

Pat and I were neighbors back in New Jersey in the late 60s. There were four women in the semi-rural neighborhood, all with children, who got together, supported one another, shared ideas and dreams. Pat moved to Maine, another to New Hampshire, one to another part of Jersey and then to North Carolina, and I eventually to Pennsylvania. At one point, we all gathered in Maine at Pat's. She remembered that I did not care for lobster and made a special beef stew for me. Over the years we maintained contact for a period of time, but then drifted away. I spoke with her early last Fall and I could tell she was really not well.
What an interesting, intriguing person she was. She walked into our house one day with one of her paintings and said, "Here, why have a print, when you can have an original?" She had run out of wall space in her little farmhouse and gave us one of her paintings. We have several of her paintings and I treasure them. So many memories I have of her.
My condolences to the family. I will notify the other two members of the foursome.

I worked with Pat for years at Medomak Valley Land Trust, and really enjoyed every conversation with her! Such a spirited lady she was. I enjoyed conversations about horses with her, and also one crazy ride in her Suburban out through her beautiful carriage roads and the incredibly rutted and unmaintained Old County Road. She was so proud of her trails, and of conserving her lovely property. She will be missed.

Michael, Peter, Todd and Dana -
My condolences on the loss of Pat. Between her beautiful gardens (and many houseplants) and her amazing artwork, she definitely brightened up her corner of the world. She and Parker made a great couple and the town won't be the same without them.

To the Spofford family, as the administrator of the Facebook Jeanne d'Arc Academy alum group I want to offer my condolences on the passing of your mother. I was glad to notice that she had attended the school. Family members are welcome to join the group and share any memories of her time spent there, that got passed down.
