Obituary for Norman Wildes
OWLS HEAD – Norman K. Wildes, 84, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, October 10, 2020 at Sussman Hospice House in Rockport.
Born in Portland, April 13, 1936, Norman was the son of Orrin and Christabel Allen Wildes. He was educated in Rockland, and was a 1954 Honor Gradate of Rockland High School.
Following graduation Norman enlisted in the US Air Force where he served during the Korean War era. Stationed in Limestone, he was honorably discharged in 1958. During this time, Norman married Winifred Earl on March 27, 1957. Together they made their home and raised their family on Limerock Street in Rockland, living in the same home for over 57 years.
He began his career at Bath Iron Works where he entered an apprenticeship program. Earning the equivalent of an associate’s degree, Norman was employed with the Department of the Navy for over 30 years. He retired in July of 1994 as a Ship Building Production Controller. He was proud of his Air Force Service and the work he did for the Navy and enjoyed reminiscing and comparing stories with his son-in-law.
Never one to be idle, Norman continued working even in retirement. Before retiring at the age of 82, Norman was a familiar, smiling face, helping hand and friend to many who entered the E.L. Spear Hardware Store in Rockland. He was a member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks, serving in many capacities including Exalted Ruler. In his younger years he also served as a Boy Scout Leader for several local troops.
Number one in Norman’s life was his family. He loved nothing more than big family gatherings at the holidays, cook-outs, and visits from grandchildren. His daughters said that he would do anything to help others, giving more than he could often afford to give, but doing so with a smile, without judgment and always with love. They couldn’t remember that he ever had a bad word to say about anyone, that he forgave without question and was someone others aspired to be like. His grandchildren were his world, and he was like a second father to many of them, with several of them choosing to live with him from time to time.
Although he had roots, he loved to travel, taking many trips for work and with friends and family. Most notably he was proud to have taken his wife to Spain and Italy, as well as many trips to California, Hawaii and more.
He had many hobbies throughout his life and he especially loved building and flying model airplanes. Playing cribbage and other board games with his wife was another favorite pastime. When his dear wife, Winnie, entered Windward Gardens for care, Norman went with her, checking himself in a bit early just to be near her. They could be seen right up until his recent brief illness, playing games together in the activities room.
Norman’s personality, zest for life and loving heart will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
Predeceased by his brother and sister-in-law Lawrence and Ethel Wildes; a daughter Crystal Wildes in 1982; and a nephew Wesley Wildes who passed away just two days prior to Norman at the Sussman House; Norman is survived by his wife of 63 years Winifred Wildes of Camden; his daughters, Bonnie Jordan and her husband Bruce of Rockland, June Peters and her husband Doug of Sebring, FL; his grandchildren, Angela Long and her husband Mike of St. George, Amber Guinn of Rockland, Alex Cosenze of Rockland, Andrew Cosenze of California, Abigayle Cosenze and her companion Matt Webb of Newburg; his great-grandchildren, Rachel Batschi and her husband Jordan of Port Orchard, WA, Sean Long, Nick Long and Carrie Long, all of St. George, Kelsey Guinn and Kestin Guinn both of Rockland; his bonus grandchildren, Amber Peters and her son Brysen, Leah Allen, Doug Peters, Jr. all of Belfast, Eugene Peters of Angola, NY; as well as many nieces and nephews, including three with whom he was particularly close, Larry Wildes, Cathy Wildes and Wanda Wildes.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, October 16, 2020 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. Social distancing and masks are encouraged. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 17, 2020 at The Anchor Church, 3 Cross Street, Rockport.
