Obituary for Mildred Sherman Thurston

BAR HARBOR - Mildred Evelyn Sherman Thurston, 89, passed away on September 11, 2022.

She was born on October 25, 1932, in Rockland, Maine to Calvin Austin Sherman, Sr. & Lena Weed Sherman. She was a 1951 graduate of Rockland High School. Mildred married Richard B. Young on August 1, 1995, and had one daughter, Crystal M. Young Bourque.

She was employed by the State of Maine, Department of Labor, Rockland office from March 1962 to June 1, 1976. On June 26, 1976, she married Leslie W. Thurston of Southwest Harbor and subsequently was employed by the Department of Labor, Ellsworth office until her retirement on June 1, 1991.

Mildred enjoyed knitting, gardening, traveling and volunteered her services at the former SPCA Thrift Shop in Northeast Harbor. During recent years she was a part of the Ladies Aid Society of the Tremont Congregational Church. She also loved meeting with friends at the local coffee shop to discuss the events of the day, their thoughts & ideas. She was inspired by organ & piano music, loved animals, especially cats.

Mildred was a member of the Supreme Emblem Club, No. 200, Rockland and Order of Eastern Star, Ivy Chapter #16, Warren. She attended Tremont Congregational Church in Bass Harbor.

Other than her parents, Mildred was pre-deceased by her husband, Leslie W. Thurston of Southwest Harbor; her brother, Calvin; two sisters, Edna and Cynthia; a nephew, Stephen; and a step granddaughter, Gretchen.

Mildred is survived by her daughter Crystal Young Bourque and husband Joe of Augusta; her stepchildren, Kathleen Thurston Thurnau and husband William of Foristell, Missouri, Paula Thurston Dunbar and husband Guy of Southwest Harbor, Susan Thurston Douglas and husband Paul of Hulls Cove, and Bill Thurston & wife Gabrielle of Southwest Harbor; two grandchildren, Nicholas Bourque and wife Chelsea of Levant, and Kimberly Bourque of Augusta; step grandchildren, William Thurnau, Kirstie Dunbar-Kari, Hollie Sawyer, Lucas Dunbar, Brennan Spofford, Peter Benson V, Marie Connell, and Maxine Benson; two great grandchildren, Lily Mitchell and Henry Bourque; step great grandchildren, Beau and Jaqueline Niemann, Caleb Thurnau, Jack and Leo Kari, Joshua Sawyer, Jolene and Guy Williams, Mallory, Phoebe, Cassidy and Aubrey Dunbar; one niece, Trilby Post; two nephews, James Sherman and Mark Steeves.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no public or private visiting hours, funeral service, or graveside service. Her burial will be held at Achorn Cemetery, Rockland.
