Obituary for Mary Ella Grinnell
ISLESBORO - Mary Ella Rolerson Grinnell, 101 passed away peacefully, Tuesday July 5, 2022. Mary Ella was born on Islesboro to Leslie and Annie (Jones) Rolerson and was one of six children, John, David, Jesse, Lamont, and Nellie, all who have passed before her. Mary Ella married the late Douglas Grinnell, a WWII Navy Veteran, and had two daughters, Dawn (Richard) Boucher and Kathy Babineau who both preceded her.
Mary Ella is survived by her grandchildren, Eric Boucher, Shane Boucher, Michelle Lee, and her sidekick Ray Goergen. Mary Ella was the proud aunt to many nephews and nieces and had a large extended family. Mary Ella was so proud of her family and took a keen interest in genealogy often tracing her family line back generations.
Mary Ella grew up on Islesboro and was a co-founder, with her brother Jesse, of the Islesboro Historical Society. She continued to support “the rock” through her entire life, always interested in reports from the island. She lived her later years in Rockport with her family. Those that knew Mary Ella knew she always had a good story to tell and sometimes they were even true. Mary Ella had a full and long life touching the lives of so many people with her love and kindness, often through the post, because everyone liked a little something in the post, she always said. This is evident by the hundreds of pen pals Mary Ella had all over the world, from Bangor to CO, IL, IN, Australia, Wales and beyond.
A special thank you goes to the care givers at the Cushing and later Owls Head Homesteads, for taking such good care of our Gram right up to the end, especially her adopted niece Barbara Courant.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. During the month of August the family will have a service on Islesboro where Gram wanted to spend her eternal life, information will be made available at a later date.
