Obituary for Madeline Estelle Shaw

ROCKLAND – Madeline E. Shaw, 90, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Knox Center for Long Term Care, after several years of declining health.
Born in Rockland, February 23, 1929, she was the daughter of Milton E. and Mary E. Donohue Hoffses.
Other than her parents, Madeline was pre-deceased by her husband of 55 years, Laurel V. Shaw in 2003, and her brother Herman T. Hoffses in 1985. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Maxine Hoffses of Rockland; her niece and long-term caretaker, Laureen A. Frost and her husband David H. Bergquist of Hermon, as well as several nieces and nephews throughout New England.

Madeline graduated with honors from Rockland High School in 1947 and immediately went to work at the Maine State Ferry terminal in Rockland. There, she sold tickets and managed ferry schedules for more than forty years. She came to know hundreds of regular passengers that she regarded as her extended family. She retired in 1991.
Madeline was a life member of the former First Baptist Church in Rockland, and a former member of Maine State Employees Association.

With her husband, Madeline enjoyed traveling, dancing, relaxing at their camp in St. George, socializing with their many friends and sampling ‘bean suppers’ throughout the Midcoast area.

The family wishes to especially thank and acknowledge the 1st floor staff at the Knox Center for their kind and attentive care.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a service will begin at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. David English will officiate. Interment will follow in Sea View Cemetery, Glen Cove. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to West Rockport Baptist Church, P.O.
