Obituary for Lois Mary Levensaler
ROCKLAND - Lois Mary Levensaler, 87, died peacefully at home on April 17, 2021.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1933, to Raymond and Sadie Levensaler in Bronx, N.Y. Lois attended Saint Barnabas schools and graduated from high school in 1951. She worked for the New York Telephone Company until her marriage in 1955. Lois moved to Maine in 1973, where she worked for several businesses, performing housekeeping and clerical duties.
Lois’ passion was the theater, and she participated in all facets of stage production. Lois was an active member of Camden Civic Theatre for many years. She studied Stanislavski-inspired method acting with Maude Higgins, who thought highly of Lois’ talent. A gifted performer in both dramatic and comedic roles, Lois was famously fearless on stage, whether exploring raw emotion in “‘night, Mother,” co-starring with her daughter Jean; or delighting both audience and fellow actors as the stripper Mazeppa in “Gypsy.” Her last theater project was co-directing “The Bad Seed” with her daughter Mary Lou in 2012.
Lois is survived by her daughters Mary Lou Curtis and Jean Marie Levensaler, and son-in-law Foner Curtis, all of Rockland; grandson Daniel Ames of Rockland, granddaughter Jennifer Ames of Florida; and great-granddaughter Haley Simmons of Hawaii. Lois had several “grandchildren” with four legs - Duncan, Harpo, Oskar and Juliette, all of Rockland - whom she loved dearly. She will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and time to be determined at the Camden Opera House. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Pope Memorial Humane Society are encouraged.
