North Haven — Lawrence Richard Beverage, Jr, passed away at age 74 from pulmonary disease on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2019, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Larry was born in Swampscott, Mass., Oct 22, 1944. He was the eldest child of Lawrence R. Sr. and Dorothy Thayer Beverage.
In 1953, at the age of 9, Larry moved with his parents to their hometown of North Haven. He graduated from North Haven High School. In 1966, he married Margaret, who was his wife for 40 years. They lived in Waynesburg, Pa., for a short time and then moved to North Haven and had their two daughters, Stacy and Crystal, both born in North Haven.
Larry learned to be a hard worker as a child helping with the family farm. He then did a variety of jobs, such as working for his Uncle Bud for a year and going lobstering. He held the custodial and school bus driver position for a year. Like others in his family, he enjoyed woodworking. He built a greenhouse for his wife that became her business for a time. He built their house on North Haven. He worked for his friend Ronnie Curtis in his construction business. In later years he enjoyed making things for his grandchildren, such as doll cradles, building blocks and toy boxes. In his early 30s, Larry moved into his lifelong career working on Leadbetter Island. He was hired by the White family in 1976 and retired in the fall of 2018. He was very dedicated to the many families that he worked with, and was often seen day or night traveling to and from the Posey L.
Larry held a variety of community volunteer positions on the island. He was a Grange member, served as a town selectman, served on the Planning Board and was a Board of Trustees member. He was also a trustee for the Seaview Cemetery. Larry enjoyed his family and friends. His hobbies included a love of golfing, reading a great mystery novel, playing poker, and he diligently pursued his fondness for antiquing, which he began with his wife and continued until his passing.
Larry is survived by his daughters, Stacy Lee Beverage, and her wife, Kourtney Sherwood, of Bath, Crystal Beverage Grant and her husband, Justin Grant, of North Haven; his two brothers, Raymond Beverage and his wife, Maria, of New Jersey, Wayne Beverage and his wife, Susan, of Florida; a sister, Bonnie Waterman, and her husband, Paul, of North Haven; his sister in-law, Pamela Beverage of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, Dillon Ames, Justice Grant, Kaylee Grant and Kyle Grant; three step- grandchildren, Maddox, Kobe and Klara Belle; his two great-grandchildren, Kaysen Brown and Kenzie Ames; many nieces and nephews; cousin Linda Soper and husband Bob of Lynn, Mass.; maternal uncle Edwin Thayer and wife Ruth of North Haven; and many cousins and friends. Larry will be dearly missed.
Larry was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Hamilton Beverage, his mother and father, Dorothy and Lawrence Beverage Sr., and three brothers, Gary, Ralph and Paul Beverage.
There will be a graveside service for family and friends at 11 a.m. Oct. 19 in North Haven at the Sea View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Southern Harbor House, 12 Pulpit Harbor Road, North Haven, ME 04853.
