Obituary for John William Marr Sr.

ROCKLAND - John W. Marr, Sr. died after a series of complicated medical conditions and procedures, comfortably in his home on September 12th, 2022.

Born on January 8, 1951, to Harold Sr. and Thelma (Nelson) Marr, now deceased, of Thomaston, Maine. He enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving a tour in Vietnam (1968-1969) and was honorably discharged in 1970.

While working multiple jobs and having three young sons, he attended multiple colleges to earn his Associates Degree. Some years after the birth of his daughter, he transferred to Southern New Hampshire University (then, NH College), graduating with a Bachelor Degree in Business Science.

He had many careers throughout his lifetime, working for; Fisher Engineering, US Postal Service (in both Maine and NH), Winebaum News, Boston Globe and finally the N.Y. Times covering from Boston, MA to Springfield, VA. He retired shortly after the death of his first wife, and children’s mother, Linda.

John was a life member of the American Legion in Rollinsford, NH; the Elks Lodge in Rockland, ME, VFW in Augusta, ME, as well as the Disabled American Veterans in Loudon, TN. He was also an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus, Rockland, ME.

John is survived by his siblings; Harold Marr, Jr. and wife Caroline, William Marr and wife Tammy, Robert Marr, Beverly Brown and husband Milton, and Peter Young and wife Sherry; by his four children, John Marr, Jr. and wife Gizelle, Jason Marr and wife Jennifer, Jeremy Marr and wife Richelle, Lisa-Marie Marr. In addition, John had; 14 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is pre-deceased by his wives Linda Lee (Gamage) Marr and Pamela (Salo) Marr; as well as his siblings, Fred Marr, Betty Marr, and several sister/brother-in-law’s.

He will always be remembered as a loving husband and father, and by his generosity, contagious smile, humor, and hard-working nature.

There will be a private graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on October 1, 2022, which can be attended via livestreaming (during or after the event) by visiting John’s Book of Memories at www.bchfh.com. All are invited to attend a celebration of life that will be held on October 1, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge on Rankin Street, Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John’s name, or his wives Linda and Pamela's, to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston, MA 02215.
