Obituary for Jeanette Thompson
UNION - Jeanette H. Thompson, 87, died in her sleep, Sunday, August 9, 2020. Born Jeanette Hester Hyvarinen on November 24, 1932, she was the daughter of Wilho and Hester Simmons Hyvarinen of Long Cove, Maine. She grew up and attended school there, graduating in 1951 from the St. George High School in Tenants Harbor. Her father passed away just a few days after her graduation and she went to work in the Port Clyde Cannery to help her mother.
On September 12, 1952 she married Linwood Thompson of Port Clyde. During that time she worked at the telephone company in Tenants Harbor as a switchboard operator. She had a German Shepherd dog and passed her love of German Shepherds to Linwood who owned one until he passed away in 2014.
During her lifetime Jeanette had many jobs. She babysat children for school teachers in her home, she cleaned cottages, took in laundry, baked pies to sell, went brushing and made wreaths at Christmas time, cleaned hotel rooms, took care of many elderly people in their homes till their passing, with her last job working at the Knox Center, doing laundry and housekeeping.
She grew up in hard times and never had much, but could always make do with little. She taught her daughters how to clean and cook. She taught them to work hard and do your best at whatever job you were hired to do.
She was a strong disciplinarian with her children, Terry, Julie and Gary, but there was not a better nurse to have when you were sick. She nursed her children through the chicken pox, measles, mumps, scarlet fever, and pneumonia just to name a few.
She loved to sing and sang songs to her children while they waited for hours on end for their father to stop talking to people in J. C. Robinson's in St. George and at Pinkham's outboard shop in Waldoboro. Later, when she had grandchildren she sang to them and would often hum when she forgot the words.
She was less of a disciplinarian when it came to her grandchildren, great grandchildren and especially her one and only great-great grandson, Phillip Jura, age 5. She loved him and told everyone how smart he was. Phillip said she cheated when it came to playing cards because she couldn't see the numbers and tried to make the number on the card a different one.
For the past six years she resided at Quarry Hill and loved the residents and staff there. She stressed how wonderful the nursing staff was and how she loved the activities such as the music, wine socials, picnics, church services, outings that they went on, including snowmobiling one winter and trips to Dorman's Dairy Dream. On August 4th she got to have lunch at her daughter Julie's house with Terry and her sister, Barbara. When Julie took her back to Quarry Hill she told her that Julie's best friend, Janice Dorman Cross (who had already passed) would be coming to get her when she passed. Since March when COVID hit us all, residents at Quarry Hill were quarantined and she missed having her meals in the dining room with her friends and all of the other activities there. You could say COVID took her life even though she never had it, she just couldn't take the isolation.
Other than her parents, Jeanette was pre-deceased by her ex-husband Linwood Thompson of Rockland and her son Gary L. Thompson of Washington. Jeanette is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Terry and Blaine Cook, Sr. of Union, Julie and Mike Waller of Union; her older sister Jewell Sylveria of Quarry Hill, Camden; her brother Gary Hyvarinen and his wife Sandra of Union; her sister Barbara Simpson of Rockland; seven grandchildren, Heather Benson and husband Brian, Nathaniel Benner and wife Cori, Russell Cook, Blaine Cook, Jr. and wife Kasey, Zach Cook and wife Tia, Barbara Chapman and husband Bob and Jesse Thompson; two step- grandchildren, Sueann and Mikey; 13 great-grandchildren, Michaela, Damian, Cody, Blaine, III, Bryce, Blake, Beaudry, Abbie, Adam, Kaitlyn, Marty, Malcolm and Delaney; eight step-great-grandchildren, Timmarie, Trapper, lze, Ale, Caleb, Chad, Leighton, Noah; and one great-great-grandson Phillip; several nieces, nephews, cousins and her friends at Quarry Hill especially her friend Georgia.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, August 21, 2020 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
In lieu of flowers, family asks that donations be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Donation Department 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
