Obituary for Janice May Splaine

ROCKLAND - Janice May Splaine, 90, passed away Monday, April 25, 2022 at the Sussman House, Rockport. She was born in Hartford, CT, March 5, 1932, the daughter of Edwin Hyland and Dorothy Hannum May. Janice graduated from Wethersfield High School, class of 1949. Janice attended Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in Textile Design (R.I.S.D.) until 1952. On August, 9, 1952 she married Francis Edward Splaine, Jr., a 1952 graduate of R.I.S.D. After living in RI for one year, they moved to Rochester, NH for five years; Aliceville, AL for nine years; Geelong, Australia for almost four years; Valatie, NY for eight years, eventually settling in Rockland.

‘Jan’ was ladies golf champion of Aliceville Golf Club, Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie, NY, and Rockland Golf Club. She served on the Board of Directors of Rockland Golf Club for eight years, and was the first female President of RGC 1992-1993. She started and maintained many plants and gardens at RGC through the years. Jan enjoyed many years of painting (oils and watercolors), crafts of all kinds and playing Bridge. She was a “people person”.

Jan is survived by four sons, James Edwin Splaine and his partner Therese Howley of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Peter Atwood Splaine and his wife Lori of Denver, Colorado, Robert Welles Splaine and his wife Kelley of Lincolnville, Daniel Elliott and his wife Peg of Little River, South Carolina; her grandsons Patrick Splaine and his wife Laura of Bangor, Ryan Splaine and his partner Chaya Stilson of Rockland. Mrs. Splaine was predeceased by her brother Edwin H. May, Jr., former US Congressman from CT, and her sister Elizabeth M. Barnes formerly of Bristol, CT.

The family will hold a private memorial service to honor Jan’s life. In remembrance, donations may be made to Spinal Cord Research, Craig Hospital, 3425 South Clarkson St., Englewood CO, 80113, in the name of Peter A. Splaine.
