Obituary for Janey Barton

CHELSEA – Janey B. Barton, 72, died peacefully following an extended illness, Friday, March 18, 2022 at Maine General Medical Center in Augusta.

Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of James and Freda Haskell Barton. Moving with her family to Texas, Janey graduated high school there. Then she moved back to Massachusetts, where she attended American International College in Springfield, MA and graduated with a Bachelor’s in English.

She worked briefly as a teacher before returning home to work on her own. As her father had retired to become a lobsterman, Janey had the good fortune to run her own fresh crab meat business. In1983, she returned to school, attending the University of Maine, and earned an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science.

From 1986 to 2013 Janey was employed by the State of Maine as a computer programmer and systems analyst.
Janey had a forceful personality and a strong faith in God and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She accepted many callings and served faithfully in many different areas of the church.

Janey had a variety of interests including reading, music, cooking, knitting, crocheting, cross-stitch and family history. She was a talented crafter, doing beautiful handwork. She greatly enjoyed stitchery and took great pleasure in attending many ‘Celebration of Needlework’ conventions with dear friends.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Predeceased by her parents; Janey is survived by her sisters, Judyth Reitze and her husband Charles of Millinocket, Martha Conrad and her husband Barclay ‘Bart’ of Blackwood, New Jersey; as well as her niece and nephews, Ruth, Thomas, David and James; and many cousins and great-nieces and great-nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Farmingdale Ward, 14 Hasson Street, Farmingdale. Janey will be laid to rest privately in the spring.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
