Obituary for Hilda S. Cushman

SPRUCE HEAD – Hilda Cushman, 93, passed away peacefully, at Tall Pines in Belfast in the early morning hours of November 14, 2022.

Hilda was born on December 6, 1928 to Carl and Betsy (McGuffie) Swanson on Clark Island, where she was raised and spent most of her life.

During her teenage years, she worked at the Craignair Inn as a housekeeper and waitress. After graduating from High School, Hilda raised her three children, Darlene, David and Fred. Later in life she went to work in local fish factories and Target Marketing in Rockland.

Hilda enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, whether as a hostess or guest. Over time she made many precious memories with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Hilda was predeceased by her parents and her brothers, Carl E. McGuffie, Ernest ‘Sonny’ Swanson and Roy Swanson. She is survived by her sister Shirley Talbot and her husband Ted of Owls Head; her three children, Darlene Melanson and her husband Terry of Cushing, David Cushman of Clark Island, Fred Cushman and his companion Shari Elwell of South Thomaston; her grandchildren, Angie Prior and her husband Todd of Cushing, Albert Grant and his companion Sara Mitchell of Warren; two step-grandchildren, Terry Melanson, Jr. of Robbinston, Corey Melanson and his companion Hannah Thompson of Cushing; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; as well as her ‘adopted’ grandchildren whom she loved dearly; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, November 21, 2022 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, where a celebration of her life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2022. The Reverend Larry Wheelis will officiate.
