Obituary for Helen Wall

TENANTS HARBOR – Helen K. Wall, 98, died Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at the Sussman House in Rockport, after a period of declining health.

Born in Skowhegan, October 28, 1923, she was a daughter of Robert J. Sr., and Arvilla Hill Powell. She moved to Rockland with her family at an early age and in pursuit of her father’s fishing career, lived on several Penobscot Bay islands before returning to Rockland. She attended local schools.

She married Charles W. Wall September 21, 1946. They made their home in St. George and Tenants Harbor all their married lives.

Since 1974, she was an active member of the American Legion Kinney-Melquist, Post 34, Auxiliary in St. George, and served as Vice-President of that auxiliary from 1990 to 1994. She enjoyed helping with dinners and other events the Auxiliary hosted. “Back in the day”, she was an active member of the St. George Fire Department’s, Fire-Flies.

Helen was a devoted home maker. An excellent seamstress, she could sew or knit anything. She particularly enjoyed knitting coats, hats and sweaters, many of which she gave away.

While in her mid-60s, she took an interest in studying the clothing worn by the U.S. President’s First Ladies for their Inaugural Ball and began creating doll sized replica clothing for each. She made wigs, undergarments, shoes and dresses replicating the formal clothing worn by each First Lady, from Martha Washington to Alice Roosevelt. The dolls, all dressed in formal attire were kept in a display cabinet that Helen’s husband found and restored.

In later years, Helen resided at the Rankin Center in Rockland, Merry Gardens in Camden and most recently at Windward Gardens in Camden.

Other than her parents, Helen was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles W. Wall, Sr., a daughter, Geraldine Pratt; four brothers, Robert, Jr., Walter, Henry ‘Touser’, Maurice ‘John’, and one grandson, Kristian Wall. She is survived by three children, Charles W. Wall, Jr. (Joyce) of Waldo, David Wall (Cindy) of Tenants Harbor, Roberta Cizek (Dominick) of Ocala, FL; four siblings, Douglas Powell of Thomaston, Patrick Powell (Marie) of Camden, Beulah Tweedie of Hamden, Arvilla P. Collins (Michael) of Thomaston, eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, June 6, 2022, at the South Parish (Ridge) Cemetery, Ridge Road, Tenants Harbor. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the St. George Firefighters & Ambulance Assn., POB 249, Tenants Harbor, ME 04860.
