Obituary for George Eugene Young

ROCKLAND – George E. Young, 90, went to be with the Lord at home, where he wanted to be, surrounded by his family on Friday, August 16, 2019.
Born in Rockland on August 29, 1928 to Clyde G. and Katheline Eaton Young, he attended local schools.
George started work at an early age, first at Holmes Packing Co. and then at Maine Railroad and Morris Express Co. He took a few trips on a dragger but didn’t like being away from his family and began working at the Camden Shipyard and lobstering part time. He began lobstering at an early age using a double-ender row boat. He would later fish with his father off Vinalhaven at Little Garden Island. Eventually, along with lobstering, he would come to work for Horatio Knight for 40 years at Knight’s Marine. After retiring he continued lobstering until he was 87 years old.
George was an accomplished artist with oil paints and was also fond of carving ducks, birds, and eagles.
He enjoyed building Skip Jacks for a local boat club as well as skiffs for many local fishermen. George was known to be always on the go “doing something” and would help anyone in need. He was also a member of Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church.
On May 10, 1947 he married Dorothea “Dot” Knight who was from Northport and at the time of his passing had been married to her for 72 years. George and Dot enjoyed travelling to Florida to spend time with her sister Lucille, which they did for 7 years, becoming members of the Good Sam Club and then the Happy Campers Club.
Predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Loren, Cleo and Floyd Young, George is survived by his wife Dot of Rockland; a daughter Sharon Marriner of South Thomaston; his son Donald Young of Warren; his brother John Young and his wife Kay of Rockland; three grandchildren, Courtney Young of Charleston, Nicholas Young of New York, N.Y., and Amanda Young of Boston, as well as two very special great-grandchildren, Avery and Vance Faulkingham of Charleston.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 20, 2019 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland where a celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 with Pastor Mark Adolphson and the Rev.
