Obituary for George Dedekian

ROCKLAND – George Dedekian, 100, passed away peacefully at his son’s home in Alabama, Saturday, April 23, 2022.

Born in Brighton, Massachusetts February 8, 1922, he was the son of Baghdasar and Zabell Dedekian. Growing up in Watertown, MA, he later served in the United States Coast Guard as a radio and electronics technician during World War II and also served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean war. While stationed in Rockland, Maine with the USCG he met his beloved wife, Eleanor, of 67 years.

George had several hobbies ranging from operating the ham radio and speaking with many different people from around the world to NASCAR racing. At one point he even had the honor of driving his son’s street division car at the Norwood Arena Speedway.

In 1969 he purchased a 1967 Shelby Mustang that quickly became not only a true passion but also a way of life. He and Eleanor became part of the Shelby American Auto Club as representatives for the Northeast Region. The Shelby remained in his care until he passed.

George was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Eleanor and his daughter, Louise.

He is survived by his son and daughter in-law Richard and Suzanne; his daughter Cheryl; his grandchildren, Sarah Mason, Jaime Dedekian, Lee Knowles and Megan Knowles; as well as his great-grandchildren, Cameron Mason, Connor Mason, Autumn Canterbury and Tanner Canterbury.

Friends and Family are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland where a Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022. Interment at Achorn will follow.
