Obituary for Gene Staples

Gene Staples, of Thomaston, died on May 8, 2022, after a long illness.

Born on July 10, 1945, Gene was the son of Eugene Staples and Ruth Oliver Staples, one of seven children. Growing up in Rockland, he attended Rockland schools, graduating from Rockland District High School in 1963. He entered the U.S. Navy after graduation, retiring after more than 22 years of service. He served two tours on the USS Yosemite.

Gene and his siblings spent their childhood summers on Metinic Island, where they shared many adventures. Gene lobstered as a boy, rowing by hand a peapod built by Dynamite Payson.

Gene loved sports, playing golf with his friends and horseshoes with his son Brandon. He loved rooting for his favorite football team, the Giants, and the Red Sox. He loved Big Band music and Elvis and was a fine jitterbug dancer.

Gene was always ready for a good card game or board game. He was very competitive and loved to win; in fact, his motto was “win at all costs.” He was the life of the party and loved to tease his brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews. Everyone remembers his “I got you last,” one of his favorite expressions when teasing in good fun. He was a great brother and will always be loved and remembered as “Uncle Genius.”

Loved and survived by his wife, Lorrie Staples, who cared for him at home during his illness; his three children, Diane, Jeff, and Brandon; his siblings, Mim Lewis, Barbara (Dick) Arasz, Fran (Terry) Costa, Danny (Cindi) Staples, and Betty Grant. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Gene was predeceased by his parents and youngest brother, David Staples. As he wished, there will be no services.
