Obituary for Gary Young

OWLS HEAD – Gary C. Young, 74, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, Sunday, March 6, 2022 following a period of declining health.

Born in Rockland, October 28, 1947, he was the son of Maxwell and Cecelia Mitchell Young. Educated locally he was a 1965 graduate of Rockland High School.

In 1966, following high school, Gary married Lois Barrows at the Children’s Chapel in Rockport. Together they made their home on Matinicus. While living on the island, Gary earned his pilot license in 1977. Shortly after, he bought his own plane, which he used to fly his family to and from the island. Gary also enjoyed a 25 year career as a lobsterman and commercial fisherman. Fishing with his son Scott at his side made him the most proud.

The first summer after converting his lobster boat to a dragger, the whole family served as his crew. Later, Gary began a second career at the Maine State Prison. Beginning as a corrections officer, he later moved up to the Bolduc Farm where he was a supervisor until retiring.

When he wasn’t busy working, Gary enjoyed being outdoors. Hunting, fishing and gardening were some of his favorite pastimes. He found great joy in keeping a vegetable garden and loved a good strawberry patch. In 2013 Gary was pleased to have a successful moose hunt with his son. Family was his number one priority and he was a proud grandfather who enjoyed spending time with all of the kids.

Gary was known as a prankster, and the smirk on his face often said it all. He loved to ‘get your goat’ and was sometimes known to be a little bit stubborn.

Gary will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his siblings, Catherine Simaitis, Beverly Pauley and Roger Young; and a granddaughter Brianna Martin in 1995, Gary is survived by his wife Lois of Owls Head; his children, Scott Young and his wife Michelle of Tenants Harbor, Shannon Young of South Thomaston, Susanne Martin of Thomaston; seven grandchildren, Danica Hooper, Devyn Hooper, Noah Martin, Garrett Young, Jamie Martin, Gavin Young; one great-grandson Levi Hooper-Chipman; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Jean Young of South Thomaston, Rosemary and Jeff Weymouth of Camden, Wayne ‘Butch’ Barrows of Camden, Jeff Barrows of Union, Donna Barrows of Rockland, Bobbi Barrows of Rockport; as well as many nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

Gary’s family will remember his life privately this summer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, 22 Bramhall Street, Portland, Maine 04102 or the Boston Children’s Hospital, 401 Park Drive, Suite 602, Boston, MA 02215.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
