SOUTH THOMASTON – Freeland Ephriam Philip, 81, left this world on March 22, 2020 following a period of declining health.
Born January 5, 1939 on Vinalhaven to John and Clara (Walls) Philip, he was educated in local schools.

In 1969 Freeland moved to Connecticut where he worked several jobs before moving back to Vinalhaven, then Rockland later that same year.

While living in Rockland he worked in the Industrial Park making blueberry cans, then at former National Sea Products (SeaPro) as a fish cutter. He also delivered the Courier Gazette.

On August 9, 1974 he married Hilda Louise Grierson Callahan and together they made their home in Rockland before eventually settling down in South Thomaston.

Freeland loved to go camping and swimming with his grandchildren, traveling to New Hampshire, fishing, hunting, woodworking, crafts, bow hunting and making handmade bracelets that he loved to give away.

His family says that he was a kind man and loved to joke with anyone that knew him.

Predeceased by his parents and five sisters, Evelyn Thompson, Gertrude Godak, Priscilla Shepard, Ruth Jeffers, and Margaret Moody; three brothers, Frederick Philip, Ralph Philip, and Arthur Philip; two grandchildren, Travis Murray, and Bailey Callahan. He is survived by his wife Hilda of South Thomaston; his children, Corinia Graham of Wisconsin, Paul Callahan of Poland ME, John Hildings of Rockland and Dana Callahan and his wife Autumn of South Thomaston; his brother Cecil Philip of Rockland; his grandchildren, Jessica Buchanan, Jessica Murray, Joshua Murray, James Murray, Kristen Kretchman, Courtney Kretchman, Randy Graham, Laurie Boyer, Michael Campbell, and Tyler Smith, Jeffrey Callahan, Shane Callahan, Brent Callahan, Haley Callahan, and Justin Callahan two special nephews, Eddie Thompson of Portland and Jim Dwyer of Vinalhaven; his best friend who was like a brother, Arthur Grierson, and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and great grandchildren.

At this time Freeland’s family has chosen to remember his life privately and no public services will be held.

A private burial will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in South Thomaston on a later date.
