Obituary for Elliot Mednick

CLINTON, MA – Elliot H. Mednick, 63, husband of Josephine Hedrich Mednick, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 21, 1959, Elliot was the son of Gerald and Harriet Saperstein Mednick. He was educated locally, graduating from Deerfield High School. He attended the Illinois Institute of Technology and later the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, earning a master’s degree in engineering.

On June 30, 1984, Elliot married the love of his life, Josephine Hedrich in Rockland, Maine. Together, they have resided and raised their family in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

Elliot’s career was spent in the field of computer engineering and development. He worked in both hardware and software and successfully invented computer products and has many patents in his name. Elliot described himself as a “nerd amongst nerds,” but his colleagues called him “prolific” and “a genius.” He also enjoyed mentoring students and aspiring engineers.

Aside from Elliot’s successful career, he played a significant role in the upbringing of his children. With his son, he participated as a soccer coach in youth leagues, competed together in archery tournaments, and prepared his son to compete in chess tournaments. Elliot and his daughter shared a love of books, Monty Python, and always sought out unique foods to try together. Elliot was constantly looking for good food, whether it was authentic deep-dish pizza from his hometown or a delicious lobster roll from where he called “home.”

Always a technical thinker, Elliot enjoyed many hobbies over the years including drumming, lock picking, radio station production and photography. When he began his passion for photography, he quickly juxtaposed that with his love of airplanes, often running out of his office to capture the perfect image of a plane overhead.
He once again joined two of his talents, using his contacts in the music world from his progressive radio station days to begin photographing concerts for the magazine Progression. Over the years he has photographed artists such as Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel, Rush and Keith Emerson at venues like Boston Garden, House of Blues and the Pavilion.

Since January of 2018, Elliot has been a member of the Assabet Valley Camera Club and most recently served as its president. He has helped the club grow, both technically and in number of participants. Even when not participating in “official camera business,” Elliot could usually be found with a camera in hand, photographing a family get together, group outings and anything that caught his eye.

Elliot will be especially remembered for his sense of humor. Whether you knew Elliot for years or met him only once, he found a way to put a smile on your face with his goofy puns and positive outlook.

He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his parents; Elliot is survived by his beloved wife Josephine Mednick; his son and daughter-in-law Alexander and Chiara Mednick; his daughter Leah M. Foley; his grandson Luca; his brother and sister-in-law Stewart and DuAnne Mednick; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 2, 2023 at Achorn Cemetery, Old County Road, Rockland.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
