PORT CLYDE - The world lost a ray of light on April 8, 2020 when Betsy Sherrick left this world for her final journey after a brief illness.

Betsy was born in Manhattan, New York on December 21, 1947 to Margaret and James Barstow. Betsy’s youth was divided between the bustling streets of New York City and the idyllic, peaceful community of Monhegan Island, Maine, giving her a unique perspective on life, humanity and humor.

It was during her time in New York that she met the love of her life, her soulmate, Steven Sherrick. Steven finished his time in the Navy, they were married and had their first child Barbara before moving to Washington State. There the family grew with the birth of their son Paul and daughter Melody. The family eventually settled in the rustic, picturesque town of Curlew, Washington where Betsy and Steve raised their 3 kids in all the wild freedom of the mountain air. After Steven’s retirement, Betsy followed the call of her ancestors, returning to the coastal Maine of her youth…to the island views, seagull cries, eclectic artists and stories of the sea that she had spoken of so often through the years.

Betsy lived her life to the rhythm of her own drum. Whether raising dogs at her Skybright Kennels, managing the Old School Apartments in Curlew, or running the Port Clyde General Store in coastal Maine, she had her own unique approach that welcomed everyone. She breathed and drank in life freely with joy wisdom and love. Betsy had an avid curiosity for the “Why” of the world. She loved humanity, spirituality, nature and science, books, art and music. Her greatest love of all was for the people in her world. She followed their stories, hopes, dreams and struggles with her whole heart.

All who knew Betsy knew her as a warm, compassionate, witty and spiritual woman who approached life with a magical optimism that was infectious. She always had an understanding heart, an open ear, and inspired insight for those who needed it. Betsy will be profoundly missed by every person whose heart was ever touched by hers.

Betsy is survived by Steven, her husband of 55 years; her daughter Barbara Friday and her husband Jim; her son Paul and his wife Lacey; her daughter Melody and her soulmate Tom; her four grandsons, Geordey, Elijah, Gabriel and Jonah; and two great-grandbabies, Mars Mabel and Aldo Maze. She is also survived by her beloved sister Barbara Mann and her husband Milton and many nieces and nephews; and by her dearest friend of her life Lynne Youngquist and her precious family; as well as many friends too numerous to count.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
