Obituary for Edna Phyllis Carter (Stanley)

THOMASTON – Edna Phyllis Carter, 99, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Knox Center for Long Term Care in Rockland.

Born November 28, 1922 in Rockland, she was the 9th of 14 children born to Oscar and Ethel (Wilson) Stanley and was raised in Martinsville.

On July 17, 1942, Edna married Arthur C. Carter and together they made their home in Tenants Harbor where they raised their 6 children.

Later in her life she moved to Thomaston where she lived with, and was cared for, by her daughter Cynthia Landre. During the last 5 years of her life, she lived at the Knox Center, where she received excellent care.

Edna was known for having a fun filled, mischievous side to her, and loved to joke and banter with everyone she encountered.

A Homemaker all her life, Edna was an excellent cook and baker, and was well known throughout the community for her cinnamon rolls and peanut butter fudge.

She enjoyed being a life member of the Ocean View Grange, and the Maine State Grange, and during World War II she volunteered as a civilian airplane spotter to keep watch for enemy planes entering American air space.

Edna also loved baseball. She attended many local games, and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Predeceased by her parents, her husband Arthur in 2009, her sons, Arthur “Bubby” Carter and Allen Carter, her daughter, Melissa Hilliard, her grandsons, James Fernands, Elmer Larrabee Jr., Christopher Kennedy, her brothers, Clyde, Dwinal, Arnold, Carleton, Vernon “Bun”, Cecil, and Maurice Stanley, her sisters, Emma Lehtinen, Verita Hyvarinen, Frances Thompson, June Cullen, Ann Wallace, and her son in-law, Francis Landre.

She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Fernands and her husband Frank of Tenants Harbor; Laura Jean Corbett and her husband David of Bellingham, MA; Cynthia Landre of Warren; her daughter in-law, Barbara Carter of Thomaston; her grandchildren, Joe Fernands, John Fernands, Stacy Bryant, Preston Hand, David Carter, Bethany Carter, Kim Sarno, Debbie White, Amy Wiggin, Andy Carter, Aaron Craney, Sarah Rubino, Michelle Hilliard, Morgan Hilliard, 30 great grandchildren, 8 great, great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at South Parish (Ridge Church) Cemetery, Church St. in Martinsville with the Reverend Wayne Sawyer officiating.

A reception will immediately follow the service at the Ocean View Grange, 435 Port Clyde Rd. St. George.
