Obituary for Edith Laura Drinkwater (Dunbar)
SPRUCE HEAD – Edith L. Drinkwater passed away on March 8, 2021 at the Sussman House in Rockport. She was born July 8, 1928 to Charles and Blanche Dunbar in South Hope, and joined the family of four older children; John, Virginia, Janice, and Eugene. She also had a large group of aunts and uncles who helped raise her when her mother died.
Edie graduated from Rockland High School Class of ‘47 and left for Boston to a job at a large insurance company for two years. She returned to the Rockland area where she re-met and married Walter Drinkwater on May 28, 1949. They lived and loved together in their house in Spruce Head for 72 years.
In 1951, their daughter Teresa was born and two years later, Edie’s baby boy Genie was born. Terri and Genie lived a perfect life full of love and happiness with unwavering support from Edie and Walter (Sonny). Edie was always there entertaining, defending, and teaching life lessons every day.
Terri married Greg Hall and gave Edie three grandchildren; Courtnie, Bria, and Jima. They, in turn, with the help of DeDe gave her five great grandchildren; Tyde, Greg, Kurt, Walter, and Mavis. Genie married Janet VanBuskirk and added three grandchildren; Blair, Wes and his wife Kasey, and Maggie. Blair has two girls, Chloe and Reese.
Edie started early in her married life gathering forever friends. Her girlfriends and their kids would come to her house every morning to hangout. Later, when the kids were grown, they moved on to Bridge and 2:00 p.m. was the daily Bridge time. A beep on the horn and they were gone.
Edie’s life touched many. Greg Hall remained her favorite even after a divorce. Dale Johnson found a place in her heart. She paid attention to small things and knew everything about everything and when she opened her Snack Shack, her Cheeseburger Deluxe was as famous as she was.
Edie followed and supported her husband, kids, and grandkids through all stages of sports, from T-Ball, Farm League, to Twilight League Baseball and High School football, softball, horse shows, and bowling. She loved all of it from ringing bells at Twilight League to chatting up baseball.
Genie passed away in 2015 and Edith and Sonny were devastated. Everyone was devastated. Edie never could catch her breath after that.
At this time, no funeral service will be held. A private celebration of her life will be held when the weather is warmer.
