Obituary for Charlotte S. Newhall

ROCKLAND – Charlotte Staples Newhall, 99, died peacefully, Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at her home. Her loving family was at her side.

Born in Rockland, December 27, 1920, she was the daughter of Hector and Bernice Fernald Staples. Educated locally, she was a graduate of Rockland High School, class of 1939. While in high school, Charlotte met Roger A. Newhall and the two fell in love. They married in 1946 and made their home in Rockland their entire married life. Mr. Newhall passed away in 1999.
As a young woman Charlotte worked first for the Telephone Company before becoming a stay at home mother to her two children. She devoted her life to taking care of the needs of her family.

A very talented person, she kept busy with handiwork, knitting many beautiful things. She was best known for the marvelous mittens she knit and gave away as gifts. For many years, Charlotte also used her talents and vibrant personality as an active member of the Ladies Guild at the Rockland Congregational Church. There wasn’t a reception, gathering, or church dinner that didn’t have Charlotte’s loving touch. When she wasn’t busy helping or doing for others, Charlotte could be found with a good book, reading countless titles over the years.

Charlotte will be sadly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Roger Newhall in 1999; a granddaughter Erin Boss in November of 2019; her sister Priscilla Staples and her brother George Staples; Charlotte is survived by her son Gerald Newhall and his wife Claudette of Braintree, MA; her daughter Mary Boss and her husband Dr. Richard Boss of Concord, NH; a grandson Timothy Boss and his wife Katie of Penfield, NY; two great-granddaughters, Reagan Margaret Boss and Caroline Quinn Boss; a cousin Priscilla Baggs of Windham; and a sister-in-law Charlotte Staples of Spruce Head; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Charlotte’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 11, 2020 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Seth Jones will officiate. A reception will follow at 104 Limerock, adjacent to the funeral home.
