Obituary for Charles E. York

WARREN – Charles E. ‘Charlie’ York, 78, longtime Warren resident, died peacefully with his sons by his side, Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born in Rockland, December 2, 1944, he was the son of Bernard B. and Lucille A. Elwell York. Educated locally, Charlie left school early to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. While serving he was employed as a truck driver, perhaps sparking his love of trucks, driving and heavy equipment.

After being honorably discharged, Charlie worked for several local companies. He soon started a towing and plowing business, which grew into York Excavation. This was the mainstay of his professional life, and he later loved having his grandkids visit him on job sites and sit with him in the equipment.

On July 2, 1966 Charlie married the love of his life, Geraldine ‘Geri’ Everett. For many years he and Geri were members of the Warren Baptist Church and later in life enjoyed wintering in Florida.

When not busy working, Charlie kept busy, serving as president of the Snowmobile Club, on the Warren Fire Department and coaching youth sports with his family. Charlie was never one to be idle, and he had a special twinkle in his eye that drew people in. Together with his wife, he enjoyed a life-long friendship and bond with a core group of friends and community members. He took great pleasure in organizing and carrying out activities, from Saturday Night Dancing Groups to spontaneous hayride Christmas Caroling adventures, Charlie loved being with people. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Charlie was fortunate after his dear wife’s passing, to find a wonderful companion in Ceila Waltz. She was a devoted and loving companion for the rest of his days.

Predeceased by his wife, Geri in 2018; his daughter-in-law Christina York; a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence ‘Sonny’ and Florence ‘Flossy’ York; and a brother-in-law Austin Presby; Charlie is survived by his sons, Kenneth ‘Kenny’ York, Michael York and his wife Kimberly all of Warren; his grandchildren, Joshua Dodge, Elizabeth York, Anthony York, Jacob York, Nicholas York and Katelyn York; two great-granddaughters, Emma and Chloe; his siblings, Doris Presby, David York and his wife Cindy, Dale York and his wife Diane, Dennis York and his wife Peggy; many nieces and nephews, and a large, loving extended family as well as many close friends.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Warren Baptist Church, 166 Main Street, Warren, ME. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Warren Food Pantry, P.O. Box 294, Warren, ME 04864.
