Obituary for Carolyn Bartlett Gillchrest

CAMDEN - Carolyn Bartlett Gillchrest, 91, passed away peacefully, Saturday, April 30, 2022 in Camden.
Born in Hyannis, Massachusetts, November 7, 1930, she was the daughter of Cecil Goodall and Hazel (Lutz) Goodall. Her time growing up was spent on Cape Cod. She married James A. Gillchrest, Jr. on September 2nd, 1951. They enjoyed 64 years of marriage.

Together, Carolyn and James raised their five children James (Jay), Allison Beth, Janet, Kate, and Sarah.
Carolyn made her home in Maine, the state she loved and adopted for 60 plus years. After marrying they lived in New York City and on Long Island, moving to Bar Mills in 1959 where they lived for 20 years before moving to their final home in Rockport. Carolyn was an active member of the Hollis Lioness Club and several Knitting Circles. Carolyn and James enjoyed camping extensively, traveling to 48 States and Canada. She was an accomplished knitter, quilter, seamstress, fine needlework, and baker who gladly shared her knowledge with all that desired.

Predeceased by her husband, James A. Gillchrest, Jr.; Carolyn is survived by her sisters, Betty Pease and Ruthie Behlman; her sisters-in-law, Sally Brooks and Jean Simmons; her children, James A. Gillchrest III, Allison Beth Holtman and her husband Steve, Janet Horton and her husband Harry, Kate Cataline and her husband Curtis, Sarah Cummings and her husband Edward; daughter-in-law Charlene Gillchrest; her grandchildren who affectionately called her ‘Nanny’, Angela Casey, James (Jamie) Gillchrest IV, Victoria Gillchrest, James Holtman, Grayce Cummings, David Holtman, Cullen Cummings, Isabella Cataline and Gabriel Cataline; great-grandchildren Kaitlynn Gillchrest, Michelle Gillchrest, James Gillchrest V, Camden Gallant, Teryn Gallant; and great-great-grandchild Aurora Osborne; many nieces and nephews and a longtime family friend Sue Nugent.

Carolyn’s family will remember her life privately and she will be laid to rest beside her husband at Village Cemetery, Thomaston.
