Obituary for Carlton Frank "Stubby" Burnell
WARREN – Carlton “Stubby” F. Burnell, 84, journeyed to heaven on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, surrounded by the love of his daughters and family.
Born April 12, 1937 in Bridgton to Walter F. and Ellen (Harney) Burnell, he attended schools in Falmouth and graduated from Falmouth High School as part of the class of 1956.
It was in high school that Stubby met the love of his life, Sandra J. Witham, and the two dated for some time before getting married on April 2, 1960 in Falmouth. Together they built a new home where they made many long-lasting friendships, and raised their 2 girls, Sheryl and Susan.
Stubby was a hard-working man and not one to boast about his many accomplishments. He often worked 2 to 3 different jobs so that his wife, Sandy, could stay home with the girls.
He worked for a time for Stuart Jackson at Jackson Chevrolet in Portland and would often say that he’d still be working for Stuart if he hadn’t died. Following his employment with Jackson’s he went to work for Winn Dodge, (part of the Bill Dodge Auto Group) in Westbrook. Stubby enjoyed working for Winn but after some time he signed on with Howard Stetson’s Saab Garage in Warren.
Stubby spent 2 years, driving from his home in Falmouth to Stetson’s in Warren. He and Sandy decided that if he was going to stay with Howard, they needed to move closer. They eventually made their new home in Warren Village where he also became a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge #127.
While he worked with Howard Stetson, Stubby became very involved with ice racing. During the race season, every weekend brought on a new race and his car was well known for having a White Owl on the side.
In 1972, Stubby and Sandy purchased the former Shell Station in Thomaston from Donald Pendleton and would operate that business for 40 years as “Stubby’s Garage”. The two of them were also very community minded and always provided a few turkeys at Thanksgiving time for the soup kitchen. In fact, according to his daughters, Stubby provided many acts of kindness and charity that were too many to count, and that he didn’t boast about.
Predeceased by his parents, his brother Mearle, his wife Sandy, his great-granddaughter Jennifer, his nieces, Laura and Michelle, and his mother in-law Ruth, he is survived by his daughters, Sheryl (Sheri) Bartlett and her husband Dave of Washington; Susan (Sue) Burnell and Sarah of Warren; his special 4-legged companion Charlie; His grandchildren, Devon Perry, her husband Dave, and their children Joshua and Tyler of Waldoboro; Daniel Bartlett of Union; Kimberly Notarpippo, her husband John, and their children, Alex, Abby, and Damen of Oakland; Merrill Chapman, his girlfriend Taylor Bartolotta, and their children, Sawyer, Caleb, and Paisley of Bristol; his sisters, Patricia Edwards of Windham; Sandra Witham and her husband Ray of Brunswick; and many nieces and nephews.
Stubby’s daughters, Sheri and Sue would like to thank the many friends of their dad, especially Bobby Verrill, “he thought of you as his brother”. “We recognize that many of his friends have gone before him and we cherish the memories of them.

Stubby will be privately laid to rest by his family next to his wife Sandy in Gray Village Cemetery in Gray.
