Obituary for Calvin L. Roberts

THOMASTON – Calvin L. Roberts, 78, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at the Sussman House in Rockport following a gallant battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

Born in Thomaston on March 23, 1943, he was the son of Calvin W. and Hazel Weaver Roberts. He was educated in local schools.

On March 24, 1964, he married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Goodrich, at the Federated Church in Thomaston. Together they made their home in Thomaston all their married lives. When Barbara eventually fell ill, he lovingly cared for her for a number of years until she passed away on December 28, 2014.

Calvin fished off Criehaven in his teenage years. After fishing, he worked for his uncle Francis (Mickey) Weaver as a carpenter until his uncle retired. He then continued to work as a carpenter with Ober builders until his own retirement.

Calvin regularly enjoyed hunting, refinishing old furniture, and going to lawn sales, flea markets, and auctions.
For many years, Calvin dressed up as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve for the children of the family. He loved bringing joy to children.

For the last few years, he was proud to call himself a great-grandfather and relished every visit with his great-grandchildren. Calvin enjoyed playing cards with his card group ladies Joyce Ross and Ruth Lowe as well as playing scrabble with his neighbor Judy. Painting was another hobby of his and, despite the progression of his ALS, he was still able to paint until his death.

Calvin loved visits from his cousin Dee who, when leaving, would say “Love you Bub” and he finally began to say back “Love you Dee”.

He had a fondness for animals that often resulted in extremely happy pets having been covertly slipped table food as he slyly grinned.

With confirmation that he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior at a young age, his family is comforted in the knowledge that he is now with the Lord and that they will see him again.
Calvin Roberts was a sweet, gentle, and selfless man that will forever be remembered by his friends and loved ones.

Other than his wife Barbara, Calvin was predeceased by his father Calvin W Roberts, his mother Hazel Thomas and his stepfather Wendall Thomas, as well as siblings Rex Thomas and Geraldine Roberts. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, with whom he resided during his recent illness, Dianna and Brett Ross of Rockland; two grandchildren and their spouses, Dustin and Shannon Ross of Bowdoinham, Brittany and Eric Mauricette of Baileyville; three great-grandchildren, Jensen Ross, Emily and Lily Mauricette, as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the Village Cemetery, Erin Street in Thomaston. Pastor Paul Munro will officiate. All guests are asked to follow present social distancing mandates.
