Obituary for Bernice Carter Bennett

ROCKLAND – Bernice ‘Bunny’ Carter Bennett, 99, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, October 2, 2022.

Born in Cushing, July 31, 1923, she was the daughter of Alfred and Bertha Carter Orne. Attending local schools as a young girl, she later graduated high school in Pennsylvania.

Following high school, Bunny married and raised five children who were the delight of her life. Later she loved nothing more than being a grandmother to her eight grandsons and their families. She was proud of the legacy of love she had.

For more than 15 years Bunny was employed as a housekeeper at the Knox Hospital and later Pen Bay Medical Center. Following retirement she doted on her grandchildren and became an avid crafter.

Known for her floral arrangemnts and church crafts, she enjoyed helping the Sunday school with costumes and bulletin boards. She was always eager to use her talents and creativity at all of Bible Churches she was a member of over the years.

Always a demure woman, she took great pride in her appearance, enjoyed shopping well in to her 90’s and had just the right touch when it came to decorating. Never would you find a hair out of place on her head or an unmatched ribbon on a centerpiece.

For many years until she was 90, Bunny enjoyed making yearly trips South to visit her children, siblings, extended family and friends, often flying alone.

Her loving smile, spunk and warm heart will be greatly missed by all who loved her.

Predeceased by her parents; eight siblings; and a son Rex A. Bennett; and one grandson; Bunny is survived by her children, Flora Belle Bennett Lynch of Florida, Pauline ‘Lee’ Hyland her husband Jack, Bruce Bennett and his wife Dorinda, all of Maine, Timothy Bennet and his wife Valerie of Florida; two sisters, Gloria Dearborn and Leona Mixon; seven grandsons, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews and a large loving extended family. Bunny’s family would like to express their deep appreciation for Julie Pease, and the time she spent with their mother, especially in her last days.

A celebration of Bunny’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 21, 2022 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A reception will follow immediately at Solid Rock Church, Thomaston. The family will gather in July of 2023 for a further memorial service.
