TENANTS HARBOR - Adrea Bartlett Thorbjornson, 97, died peacefully at her home, Tuesday, March 8, 2005.
Born on Crotch Island, Stonington, April 27, 1907, she was a daughter of Augustus T. and Virginia Battaglia Bartlett. Her father was in charge of the Grocery Store and Post Office when the stone cutting industry was flourishing on Crotch Island.
In 1914, she moved to Stonington, where she graduated from high school. While in school, she participated in sports but particularly enjoyed playing basketball.
She later attended Gorham State Teachers College where she earned her Teacher Elementary Certificate and in 1928 earned a Teachers Special Certificate.
She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse at Clark Island, St. George, which housed grades one through eight. After three years she was transferred to another one room school at Wiley's Corner with 44 pupils in the eight grades. Two years later, the seventh and eighth grade students transferred to the old St. George High School building, while Mrs. Thorbjornson remained with the first six grades for ten years.
She took a leave of absence for the birth of her son Edward and in 1946 returned to her career, teaching grades four, five and six at Tenants Harbor School. Upon opening of the new Tenants Harbor School, she continued teaching fifth grade until her retirement after more than 42 years service. Many of Mrs. Thorbjornson's students have since reported that she was one of their favorite teachers.
For many years, Mrs. Thorbjornson enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for all her family and many friends. All were welcome at these dinners. She also loved going to her son's summer camp on Hobbs Pond.
Some of her favorite pastimes included painting with oils, ceramics, knitting and crocheting.
She was a member of Wiley's Corner Grange and a longtime communicant of St. Bernard's Catholic Church.
After retiring, she volunteered at the St. George School Library and traveled with friends by train throughout the New England states and Canada.
Mrs. Thorbjornson was pre-deceased by her husband Eric Barbo Thorbjornson, her daughter-in-law Jacquelyn Kaler, her sister Mary B. Walters, her brothers Mario and Harold Bartlett. She is survived by one son Edward B. Thorbjornson and his companion Gloria Beal of Tenants Harbor; one brother Andrew Bartlett of New York; four grandchildren, Terrie Thorbjornson and her husband Jacques Lemaire of Rockland and Key West, Eddie and Stephanie Thorbjornson, Gary and Tammy Thorbjornson all of Tenants Harbor, Travis and Renee Thorbjornson of Thomaston; and eight great-grandchildren, Erika, Garrett, Zachary, Lauren, Elias, Jayce, Jacquelyn, and Anna Lena, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 Saturday evening, March 12th at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A prayer service will be held with The Reverend Mark Reinhart officiating.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 18th at North Parish Cemetery, Wiley's Corner, St. George.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. George Firefighters and Ambulance Assn., P. O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 04860.
