Obituary for Janet S. Lum

Print
NORTHPORT, MAINE - Janet Shew Lum, 93 years of age, was received into her eternal home with Jesus on Friday, October 12, 2018. She was in the care of family during her last years and loved everyone up until her final day.

The most accurate depiction of her can be found in her college yearbook. A classmate penned an entry, “to The Gracious Lady...”. Everyone who was blessed to know her, loved her. It was unavoidable! To her late parents, Edward Barrett Shew and Gladys Faunce Shew, she was a loving and faithful daughter. To her late brother, Edward Barrett Shew, Jr, she was a loving big sister. To her late Aunt Betty Faunce Maguire, she was as a little sister and beloved childhood companion. To her many neighbors, classmates, colleagues, and acquaintances she was a dearly beloved friend. To her pupils, she was adored as Mrs. Lum. To her cousins, whom she loved as her own, she was Aunt Janet. To my father, she was the love of his life. To her grandchildren and grand-puppy, she was Nanna. To my brother and myself, and to her own babies that she was never able to bring home to raise, she was Mommy. Ted and I were adopted and loved beyond measure. She gave every bit of herself in loving those around her.

Janet graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 1943. She continued her education at Glassboro State Teacher's College, and married Arthur Remington Lum II, her beloved Art, on August 5, 1945, in Houston, Texas, where he was a Navigator in the Army Air Corps. After the war, they returned to New Jersey where she completed her Bachelor's Degree in Glassboro. She taught early elementary grades in the Haddon Township school system. After that, she was a devoted and creative homemaker as she raised us. She was active in the Haddonfield Garden Club and our local church. She played tennis and was an avid fan. She was a self-educated Botanist and Ornamental Horticulturalist who brought every garden and house plant that she touched into optimal beauty. She loved God's creation. She never had a harsh word for anyone, rather she encouraged and inspired everyone that entered her life.

Janet is survived by her son, Arthur Remington (Ted) Lum III of Mercerville, NJ, her daughter Susan Lum Flachsbart and son-in-law Harold Flachsbart of Northport, ME, her grandson James Flachsbart and his wife Laureh (Johnson) of South Thomaston, ME, her grandson Nathan Flachsbart and his wife Karmyn (Culbertson) of Belfast, ME, her grandson Micah Lum Flachsbart and his wife Dori (Stevenson) of Orono, ME, her faithful granddaughter and caregiver, Hannah Flachsbart of Northport, ME, her constant companion and grand-puppy, Ellie, and her many endearing cousins, nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the Cuthbert family plot in Colestown Cemetery, Cherry Hill, NJ. For information, please contact her daughter Susan at flachsbarts@yahoo.com.
