Obituary for Melvin 'Capt. Gus' Davis

TENANTS HARBOR – Melvin E. ‘Capt. Gus’ Davis, 77, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at his home.

Born in St. George, July 26, 1940, Gus was the son of Edward and Arlene Benner Davis. Educated locally, he attended St. George High School.

On June 27, 1964 Gus married the love of his life, Gloria Jean Colpritt in Rockland. Together they have been life-long Tenants Harbor residents.

For most of his life, Melvin worked on the sea, owning his own lobster boat, and commercial fishing operation. Gus was a well-known in the community and has been a hard worker his entire life. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you knew he had something important to say. After the passing of his wife, Gus began attending the First Baptist Church of Tenants Harbor. A private man, he had a huge heart and gave quietly and regularly to help with different church projects, especially Operation Christmas Child as well as to any community members in need. Earlier in his life, Melvin was a member of the St. George Fire Department, even serving under his father, Edward Davis as assistant fire chief.

He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his children, Helene Davis, Russell Willey, and Kevin Willey; and his brothers Craig Davis and Ronald Davis; Gus is survived by his children, Jill Ross of Warren, Tammy Willey and her companion Stephen Adams, Ronald ‘Ron’ Davis, Trevor Davis, all of Tenants Harbor, Tim Ward and his wife Felicia of Augusta; his brothers and sisters, Rosemary Cushman and her husband Dennis, Gary Davis and his wife Marjorie all of Port Clyde, Linda Golden and her husband John of Whitefield; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to visit from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2018 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at Tenants Harbor Baptist Church. Interment will follow at the Ridge Cemetery.
