Obituary for Maizie Joy Newcomb

Maizie Joy Newcomb
ROCKLAND – Maizie Joy Newcomb, 96, a lifelong resident of Rockland, died after a short illness, Monday, December 14, 2015 at the Sussman House in Rockport, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.
Maizie was the daughter of Clarence F. and Florence Parker Joy, who owned the CF Joy Insurance Agency on Main Street in Rockland for many years. She was married to Frederick (Ted) M. Newcomb who was a principal in the CF Joy Agency. He predeceased her by 20 years.
Ms. Newcomb was born on May 27, 1919 in the hamlet of Manset on Mt. Desert Island. The family, including her sister Viola (Beverage) moved to Rockland when she was five. Educated in Rockland schools, she graduated from high school in 1937, then went on to Bates College and graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1941. Maizie taught elementary school in Yarmouth. She loved the process of education and was always a happy, interested advocate for children. Maizie will be remembered by everyone who knew her as a truly wonderful person. She was kind, cheerful and always interested in the people and events around her. She loved life and that included good food (always dessert!), good books, theater, music, travel, all family get-togethers and bridge. In her later years her regular bridge games and her bridge playing friends were very important to her. And let it be said, she played to win!
She is survived by her two children, Florence Newcomb Verrill and her husband Ted W. Verrill of Southport, CT and Frederick Melville Newcomb, III and his wife Jane Philbrook Newcomb of Owls Head; grandchildren Gordon and Sarah Verrill, Abbie Knickelbein and her husband Tim, Jesse and Jacob Newcomb and his wife Maria; great-grandchildren MaizieJune, Benjamin and Henry; her niece Clare Beverage Warner of Menlo Park, CA and her nephew Parker Joy Beverage of Waterville.
Visiting hours will be at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland, Friday, December 18th from 5.00 to 7.00 pm. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 19th at 2.00 pm, at the Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock Street. The Reverend Seth D. Jones will officiate.
