Condolence: Dear Cawley Family, I'm so sorry for your loss. There are too few visionaries in this world and Mr. Cawley was one of them. One of life lessons he taught me is words matter: Customer Satisfaction not Customer Service Customer Assistance not Collections Education not Training People not Employees As a proud Person of MBNA for 18 years I feel no amount of words can express just how great a person Charles Cawley was. With sincere heartfelt condolences, Coleen Walls

Condolence From: John H. Ronan
Condolence: Dear Julie, I had hoped someday to reintroduce my son, John Henry, who was only a baby at your "Cawley Reunion" in Camden in the mid '90's, to Charles. He is now finishing his last year at Harvard and planning to conquer the business world, its a shame he will not get to know the patriarch of his mother's family, an icon and inspiration of the business world. Hopefully, Charles' legacy, particularly of philanthropy, kindness, and love, will provide you, Michael, and Maureen comfort in this time of loss. Personally, I will never forget your husband' generosity and I share my fond memories with my son. My sincerest sympathies, John H. Ronan

Condolence From: Len O'Connor
Condolence: First of all, my condolences to entire Cawley family. Charly was a true legend in the crazy world of the credit card business...a true visionary. I never had the opportunity to work directly with Charlie, but our careers at The First National Bank of Boston overlapped as I started in 1967 and moved fron the branch network to Consumer Finance in 1974. I suceeded Ted Amazeen in 1975 as Department Head. I have always felt connected to Charlie as I had to "challenge" of trying to manage our mutual mentor Jim Mogan for7 years. I also was fortunate enough to hire and manage Jim Gaffney who later worked at MBNA? I fondly remember spending an evening with Charlie and Julie at Jim and Catherine Mogans 50th anniversary in Stowe, Vt. Charie is a true pioneer and icon of the business. He will be missed as an innovator and genuinely good man.

Condolence: Dear Mrs. Cawley and family. I am so sorry for your loss. May the love and support you receive from your family and friends provide comfort during this difficult time. Thank you Mr. Cawley for all you have done to help others and especially for bringing MBNA to Maine. I am thankful to have known you - - you set the bar high - - taught us to expect nothing less than the best in all we do - - and to give back to others. I am reminded often of how fortunate I was to have worked for a company that invested so much in its people and the surrounding communities. Yes, we worked hard but we were rewarded well, and you saw to it that we worked in a beautiful environment that was second to none. You were right – it truly was the Magic of MBNA. May you rest in peace, Paula Schuessler

Condolence From: Renee McCormick
Condolence: I was so very saddened to hear of Mr. Cawley’s passing. When I walked through the lobby doors of Cole House that March day in 1987, the day after the 5th anniversary party I didn’t realize that my life was about to change. Over the next 22 years I moved from Credit Life Insurance, Gold Passage Travel, Personnel, MBNA Scholars Program, onto supporting senior officers in Marketing/Business Development along with returning to school for my bachelor’s degree which MBNA paid for, and finally working in Risk Management all the while using my best Customer Service along with making my best attempt to Think Things Through! I knew then that I was part of something great and that MBNA was being led by someone of vision! Mr. Cawley seemed to know that putting his People first and foremost would drive MBNA in the right direction. It is my honor to have worked and participated in his vision for MBNA and the community. Since moving on in 2009 I’ve often said “there will never be another place like MBNA” the reason being there will never be another visionary quite like Charles M. Cawley. Through his vision and drive for excellence came a great place to learn, work, and grow. Mr. Cawley, Thank you! My condolences go out to Mrs. Cawley, Maureen, and Dr. Michael and their families. Psalm 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid?

Condolence From: Tammy Lunn
Condolence: Dear Cawley family, My deepest condolences to your family for the loss of a great man. Mr. Cawley changed mine and my families life in more ways than I can list. The prideful feeling I had every morning walking through that revolving door and the feeling that I could be anything I set my mind to once I entered them is indescribable. I felt safe, secure, respected, valued, vulnerable, empowered and proud. I just wanted to say thank you for helping me send my children to college with your tuition benefit, thank you for making sure we had insurance coverage that was more than adequate, thank you for paying above and beyond wages for my hard work and thank you for changing my life. Your legacy will live on forever.

Condolence From: Steve Johnson
Condolence: Mr. Cawley provided more than 5,000 Mainers the opportunity to work locally for a word class organization and gave their families more than a decent wage in economically trying times. His legacy is legendary, and his contributions to the business world and to the art world will always be a shining example to others. What will not rise to the surface so rapidly are the back stories of his anonymous contributions to individuals and groups alike. He was truly a game-changer for them. "We make a living by what we get, But we make a life by what we give." -Sir Winston Churchill Thank you, Mr. Cawley. May you rest in peace.

Condolence: My heartfelt condolences to the entire Cawley family. One of Charlie's favorite aphorisms was "success is never final". The path of Charlie's life and everything he stood for has led him to the only place where we can find final success - into the waiting arms of the Lord Jesus. ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’ Matthew 25:21 Love you Charlie! Condolence From: Marc Kwiatkowski
Condolence: CMC was a man to me who personified work hard, be diligent with your duties, and expect and produce nothing short of your best day in and day out and good things will happen. I was very fortunate to work with and around Charlie for 22 years, in that time I spent allot of "car time" with him and at these times he was the most relaxed and insightful with regard to his views on things and I enjoyed that time immensely over the years. My Love and prayers go out to the family and may a 53' Crestliner (or Olds) be awaiting him at the gates of Heaven. Rest in peace my friend.

Condolence From: Jake Drew
Condolence: Although we only interacted a mere handful of times, Mr. Cawley was truly one of my heroes. Next to my family, his legacy at MBNA may have had the single largest impact on shaping my life and future. I say this today, as someone defending a Ph.D. in Computer Science this coming Friday at SMU in Dallas. My point is that I have met an interacted with a lot of really smart people, and none of them were like Mr. Cawley. I am only 38, but I have been all over the world. I also worked for MBNA in Dallas (twice), Delaware (twice), and Maine. I grew up there for almost 15 years starting at age 17. MBNA taught me so many things, but the most important thing I learned was the continual pursuit of excellence. Every single place I set foot in my life, I bleed green. I remember things like "mediocrity is within anyone's reach" and "attention to detail drives everything we do". I still even use the word "we" in my mind when I tell myself this. I say "we", because I had the honor and privilege of being part of something as great as MBNA. It is a fraternity of sorts, a badge of honor that no one can ever take away from me. I wear this badge everywhere I go in life, and it reminds of things like picking up a small gum wrapper in a hallway, not because I have to, but because that's what Mr. Cawley did. "If we do the little things right, then the big things will follow." I am certainly not perfect, and I barely came to MBNA with my high school diploma. I learned a lot of hard lessons there. However, working at the bank taught me that adversity was a catalyst for greatness. I began to believe that the fires in my life forged me, they didn't merely burn me up. Mr. Cawley chose so many good leaders. I got to sit at their feet and soak up knowledge. This was called an "open door policy", and I certainly did use it. I was selected to participate in the Management Internship program around 1999. Interacting with all of these highly intelligent individuals made me begin to see and appreciate the value MBNA placed on education. It made me aspire to educate myself. I also learned the true value of innovation and good ideas. I was Master Artist in the Masterpiece program at MBNA. I certainly know now that "opportunity seldom knocks". I also know that I am allowed to make mistakes. My adversities at MBNA taught me that "what matters is not how often we fall down, but how quickly we get back up". I grew up very economically challenged, and the people I interacted with at MBNA worked in an environment which allowed them to look inside at an individual's potential and ask that potential come out. I found my passion at MBNA, and it developed into something I could have never possibly imagined at the time. I write machine learning programs that classify gene sequences, and somehow I am certain that most of the prerequisites for what I do were instilled in me during my formative years at MBNA. Even Mr. Cawley's exit from MBNA gave me the courage in my own career to stand up for the things I truly believe in. I learned to be brave, fight for what is right, and always have an exit strategy in mind. I have no idea how the rest of my future will play out, but I do know that I will finish strong just like my mentors did before me... just like CMC did. I am sure others know far better than I do how great Mr. Cawley was, and how many lives he touched. BUT... No matter how well you think you know, you cannot possibly account for his butterfly effect. I barely even met him, but I knew who he was every single day after I started working for the bank on 9/6/1994. His decisions and his big heart influenced me. MBNA influenced me and truly changed my life. For that I am eternally grateful to the Cawley family. In fact, I am certain that my children's, children's, children are grateful to the Cawley family. I am that certain, my future legacy would be that much different without Mr. Cawley's mere indirect influence. I can only hope that my son and future generations pay me the same respect and admiration that I have for Mr. Cawley's contributions to my own future.

Condolence: I was so sad to learn of Mr. Cawley's passing. The world has lost a true leader, visionary and philanthropist. I had the privilege of working for MBNA for 10 years. I learned so much during that magical time, so many opportunities for personal and professional growth. The company and culture Mr. Cawley built was truly amazing and I will always consider myself one of the "People of MBNA". I will continue to keep the Cawley family in my prayers. Our world has lost a truly great man but Heaven has gained an angel, may he rest in peace.

Condolence From: Holly Bailey
Condolence: I was saddened to hear of Charlie Cawley's passing. He was truly a kind and generous man who led by example expecting nothing less than the very best. When I joined MBNA almost 19 years ago, I felt like I was home - no other company other than Arthur Andersen made me feel that valued and like great things were expected from me. I was single mother of 2 and the generous education programs at MBNA allowed me to earn my EMBA from UD. He inspired so many to learn, grow and give back to our communities - a legacy that will continue to pay it forward forever. It is truly the end of an era. My deepest condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Mr. Cawley.

Condolence: I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Cawley but he has had a profound impact on my life. I was hired at MBNA in Belfast right out of collage and was able to earn enough money to allow my wife to stay at home with our kids for the first 7 years of their lives. I learned more working at MBNA than I did all through college. The foundation of my professional career was built by MBNA and it has given me the opportunity to raise my family right here in Maine.

Condolence: I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mr Cawley today and would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family. If not for Mr. Cawley and the wonderful institution of MBNA, I know my life would have taken a different turn. He not only made a difference in my life, he changed it. So much generosity was provided to me by the leadership of the company, it cannot be measured. One of my final gifts was a child from China in 2005, shortly after the merger, which was "just in time" Thank God for Charlie Cawley and his incredible vision. May God give his family the comfort and peace that you seek and may the soul of Mr Cawley rest in peace.

Condolence: Many years have passed since I left MBNA, but my time there left an indelible mark on my life. I know without a doubt that this was because of Mr. Cawley's vision and leadership and humanity. Although I never met Mr. Cawley personally, I wish to express my gratitude for my experience at MBNA. Sending my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. I hope you are uplifted by the expressions of thankfulness from the thousands of people touched by his life.

Condolence: Mr Cawley I will be forever grateful for all you did for my family. I'm so glad I took the chance and walked through those big scary doors. You gave me a career. My children a good life. We got the chance to transfer up to Maine for a bit. My son had serious medical issues you afforded me the chance to be home with him. His medical bills all paid. When my mother passed you sent a stretch limo for my family and gave a beautiful luncheon. There are so many things you and MBNA made possible for me there isn't enough space to write. You touched so many lives and will leave such a beautiful legacy. Rest in peace kind sir.

Condolence: I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Charlie Cawley. My condolences to his family. One of my fondest memories of working at MBNA was when Mr. Cawley provided food and flowers for my grandmother's funeral. He didn't know me personally and I was not even yet a senior officer. But nonetheless, he extended that courtesy to me as one of his employees. I never felt like a number at his company as many people now do wherever they work. MBNA was truly magical and it was because of his spirit and vision. You will be greatly missed, Mr. Cawley. Rest in peace.

Condolence: I am saddened to hear of Charlie's passing. He was a leader and a mentor to myself and many that worked at MBNA. My prayers are with the family during this time of sorrow. Please know that all of the "people" of MBNA feel like we lost a family member. I hope the family can find comfort in knowing how many lives Charlie touched. My deepest sympathies, Dianna DeRose, Delaware MBNA
