Lawrence E.  Roshto
ROCKPORT - Lawrence Edward Roshto, 85, died peacefully January 20, 2011, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport, from cancer of the lung. He was surrounded by his wife and three children. Larry was born November 5, 1925 in Pineville, Louisiana, to Jesse and Juanita Roshto.
Larry began his military service in 1943 as a Navy corpsman (medic). He was attached to the 5th Marine Division which was in the initial wave of the attack on Iwo Jima during WWII. He was wounded three times during that action and was finally evacuated to a Navy hospital ship for medical treatment, and later, honorably discharged from the Navy. He received two Purple Heart medals for his valor. The movie "Flags of our Fathers" was based on that action.
In 1951 he re-enlisted in the Army and attended Officer Candidate School in Ft. Riley, Kansas. From there he was assigned to a command in Korea. Over the years he rose in the ranks and in 1962 Larry was sent to the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, to further his leadership prowess.
The remainder of his career was served with the US Army Security Agency, where he held command assignments in Arlington Hall Station, Virginia, Asmara, Eritrea, East Africa, and Frankfurt, Germany, retiring in 1968 as a Lt. Colonel.
During his military career, in addition to two Purple Hearts, Larry received the Legion of Merit award, Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service medal and the Silver Star medal.
He then served as Professor of Military History (ROTC) at Bangor High School for a decade. In 1978 Larry joined the Harris Corp. in Florida as a program manager and remained with Harris until retiring in 1992.
Larry leaves his wife, Geraldine, of 57 years; children, Sharon R. Schwabe, Byron L. Roshto and his wife Shelley Hudspeth Roshto, Cynthia M. Carter and her husband Dave; grandchildren, Gregory R. Schwabe, Neil D. Schwabe, Travis B. Roshto, Megan M. White; great grandchildren, Elias B. Roshto, Ari Roshto; brothers, Jesse Roshto, Irvin Roshto; sisters Malva Glaze and Jane; as well as many nephews and nieces and their children.
Family and friends are invited to visit from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., with a celebration of his life being held at 4:00 p.m., Monday, January 24, 2011 at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. The Reverend Kevin Pleas will officiate. Mr. Roshto will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery in the spring.
