H. Carl  Rhodes
ROCKLAND - H. Carl Rhodes, 69, died unexpectedly, Friday, August 21, 2009.
Born in Rockport, January 26, 1940, he was the son of Cecil and Virginia Carleton Rhodes. Educated in Rockport
schools, he was a 1958 graduate of Rockport High School.
Soon after high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy and ultimately served with the Seabees. He also furthered his education at the Culinary Institute of America and Johnson and Wales College of Culinary Arts.
On November 11, 1967, he married Debra A. Grey in Camden.
Mr. Rhodes worked 34 years as a Food Service Production Manager at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport, retiring in 2004.
He enjoyed traveling and took many trips with his wife. With his wife, Carl ran a catering business 'Rhodes Catering Service' for 25 years and also a concession stand 'Florida Buns'. For more than 38 years they traveled to fairs in Union, Windsor, Fryeburg, and Litchfield.
He was a member of Winslow-Holbrook American Legion Post No. One in Rockland.
He was predeceased by his father Cecil Rhodes, brother, Freeman 'Butch' Hawes, Jr. and sister, Joy Rhodes. Besides his mother, Virginia Hawes of Belfast and his wife, Debra of Rockland, Mr. Rhodes is survived by his son, Scott L. Rhodes; daughter, Melissa J. Byer and her husband Andrew all of Rockland; brother, Donald L. Rhodes and his companion Nancy O'Keefe of West Palm Beach, Florida; and six grandchildren, Dakota Rhodes, Kaylie Rhodes, Drew Rhodes, Cody Rubenstein, Cameron Rubenstein, and Knasic Byer; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, August 28th at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland. A reception will follow at the funeral homes' 104 Limerock reception facility.
Interment will be at a later date.
