Obituary for Jacqueline S. Reinhardt

Jacqueline S. Reinhardt
TENANTS HARBOR - Jacqueline S. "Jackie" Reinhardt, 83, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Cushing Homestead, following a brief illness.
Born in Omaha, Nebraska, November 19, 1925, she was one of four children of Fred S., Sr., and A. Marguerite Graule Shumaker. She began school in Omaha, and after moving numerous times with her family, graduated in 1943 from Bellows High School, Rye, New York.
That fall she began studies at Middlebury College in Vermont and later transferred to Barnard Teachers College in New York City. She ultimately earned a Masters Degree from Barnard.
For two years following World War II, she lived in Paris, France, where she taught at The American School. Returning to this country, she taught at various New York schools.
On August 13, 1955, she married William J. Reinhardt at Second Baptist "Ridge" Church, Martinsville, in St. George, which was her parent's residence. The couple first met while in high school and reconnected following World War II. They made their first home in Scarsdale, New York, where Mrs. Reinhardt continued teaching.
In 1956, they moved to Tenants Harbor where together with her father, they built a new home in which they have since resided.
After raising her children, in 1967 Mrs. Reinhardt returned to her vocation full time, as a teacher at St. George Junior High School Annex. She retired in 1987. Over the years she enjoyed meeting former students as adults, and was always interested in the successes of their lives.
For several years she was an active member of the Second Baptist Church in Martinsville, where she served as Organist and Choir Director. She later served in that same capacity at the Congregational Church of Rockland. In recent years she returned her membership to the Second Baptist Church of St. George at Martinsville, yet frequently attended Mass at St. Bernards Catholic Church in Rockland, where her son is Priest. During her sons' childhood, she served as a Cub Scout Den Mother.
She also enjoyed membership in the St. George Fireflies Auxiliary, Knox County Chapter of the Shakespeare Society and Maine Teachers Association.
An accomplished cook, she enjoyed family gatherings, and for 20 years devoted many hours as a volunteer at St. Bernard's Soup Kitchen, where she joyfully shared her enthusiasm for cooking.
With her husband, she enjoyed many trans-Atlantic shipboard crossings and European travels.
Pre-deceased by two brothers, Fred S. Shumaker in 1987 and Philip G. Shumaker in 1966, Mrs. Reinhardt is survived by her husband of 53 years; two sons, William S. Reinhardt and his wife Lola of Tenants Harbor, The Reverend Mark S. Reinhardt of Rockland; one daughter, Beth H. Reinhardt of Tenants Harbor; one brother, Robert C.
