Obituary for Calla Leona Phillips
WEST ROCKPORT - Calla Leona (Hickman) Phillips, 94, passed away at the Cushing Homestead, Monday, April 14, 2014.
Born in Corea, Maine, March 23, 1920, she was the daughter of Robert and Olive Donovan Hickman. Calla was educated in Corea schools and spent her summers in Bar Harbor. When she was 13, Calla moved with her family to Rockland where she graduated from Rockland High School in 1938.
In 1940, she married Lewis F. Phillips. Always a caregiver, she enjoyed sewing for her family. She took particular joy in making doll cloths for her daughters, and even ties and sport jackets for her husband. Calla also assisted in making uniforms for the Drum and Bugle Corps in Rockland, as well as Easter outfits for many.
After her daughters left home in 1960, Calla decided to follow her childhood passion and become a nurse. Later that year she enrolled nursing school at Thayer Hospital in Waterville. After graduating with high honors she began her nursing career at Knox Hospital in Rockland. Several years later she transferred to Pen Bay Medical Center where she worked in the Special Care Unit until she retired in 1980.
For the next 11 years, Calla and Lewis wintered in Seminole, Florida. In 1992, they returned to Maine permanently, living first in Rockland, and later moving to West Rockport in 2006. While in West Rockport Calla was a member of the West Rockport Baptist Church where she acquired many new and cherished friends.
Predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Lewis F. Phillips in 2008 and her step-son Richard Phillips whom she raised from the age of 2; she is survived by her daughters, Dianne M. Allen and her husband Joseph of West Rockport, Janice Goodnow of Union; six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Calla’s daughter Dianne would like to extend her thanks to the staff, nurses and caregivers at the Cushing Homestead and Kno-Wal-Lin Hospice Team.
At Calla’s request there will be no services. Private interment will be held at a later date.
