Following high school, Leo enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for three years in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged in 1970, he entered the work force, starting with a local shrimp factory. He had a passion for cars, especially old VW Beetles he could fix up. He had an extensive collection of them. He also took great pleasure in racing at the Winterport Speedway with his three man team consisting of himself and his two brothers. Each brother had an integral part in the team, one as the driver, one who purchased the parts, and one that did the majority of the work on it.
